Nintendo to Continue NFC Experiments on Wii U on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

One of the elements of the Wii U that Nintendo will be working on this year involves an increased focus on NFC titles.

The Wii U GamePad includes an integrated NFC (near-field communication) reader within the controller that allows specifically designed objects, like action figures and cards, to communicate via simply touching. Aside from the early attempts at software with Pokémon Rumble U, Nintendo boss Iwata feels that "Wii U has failed to make use of the full potential of this function so far" - he told investors today - despite being available from the start.

Going forward Nintendo have multiple ideas in the pipeline including the previously highlighted NFC payment schemes. Other options will be showcased during E3 this June, Iwata confirmed.

What else could Nintendo incorporate NFC technology into?

Since many phones have NFC built in there could be some sort of NFC interaction between Wii U and any mobile apps that they develop.

NFC is a tough one though. Definitely a cool feature, but also a tough one to fully utilize as many uses would require additional purchases.
