During the financial results Q&A session, Miyamoto and Iwata talked about how to boost the console in the coming months.
"I think you are right in the sense that we have not been able to deliver results," recalled Nintendo producer and Super Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto when discussing the launch line-up for the Wii U. Using New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World as examples, plus the upcoming Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, Miyamoto feels that Nintendo has "overcome the challenge of releasing enough first-party franchises on Wii U".
However, he did note how sales of first party Wii U were "below our expectations so far", despite receiving top scores on sites like Metacritic, and that the lack of general interest is "something that we have to take very seriously."
Miyamoto reiterated past comments in that the company "failed to offer products that parents could not resist" and "children persuade their parents to buy our products for them" in communicating the value of Wii U.
Joining the conversation, Nintendo boss Iwata feels that Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. are the kinds of games that will the main "drivers" to ensure the markets will "thoroughly acknowledge the value of Wii U".
With that in mind, however, Iwata acknowledged that "is not realistic to hope that it will sell 100 million units in the same product cycle as Wii", but "it is never too late and it is possible to achieve a certain level of sales volume and a certain level of results with Wii U".
Do you think Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. alone can help revive the Wii U this year?
