However, the big winner, by a long way, was Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, which started the ceremony as it meant to go on, by winning Outstanding British Film. Along the way, it also gathered a number of technical awards, including Best Sound and, in one of the two most predictable wins of the night, Special Visual Effects. It finished with a flourish, as Alfonso Cuaron also took Best Director. Once again, the two top honours were split evenly between Gravity and 12 Years a Slave.
The other most predictable win of the evening was in the Leading Actress category, which went to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. The books must be closed by now on her taking this year's Oscar. Best Supporting Actor went to Barkhad Abdi for his debut performance in Captain Phillips, while Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle took Best Supporting Actress. The film also won awards for its Original Screenplay and Make Up/Hair.
Philomena was among the winners, with Adapted Screenplay going to Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, while The Great Gatsby took home a pair of BAFTAs for Production Design and Costume Design. Also, Will Poulter won the public vote award for Rising Star.
