Image & Form on Nintendo's Stance Towards Indie Studios

Image & Form on Nintendo

Image & Form recently discussed Nintendo's approach to indie development in a feature on download/digital gaming.

In an interview, CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson highlighted the struggles with the DSiWare platform in the past, noting how it "was near-impossible to navigate" and "an abomination". Whilst developing Steamworld Dig for Nintendo 3DS, there was concern if the platform was viable as "unit sales hadn't taken off" until the launch of major titles in early 2013 like Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

We weren't expecting them to be so responsive and personal - they've really turned themselves around in that respect. I would recommend any developer to contact them.

Nintendo are also tinkering with the Web Framework, which invites developers to use HTML5/JavaScript as a basis for projects, rather than the more traditional means of development.

What are your thoughts on Nintendo's turnaround with independent development?
