Modder Creates HDMI Output for Nintendo 64 on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Those who wish for a crisper picture when playing classic Nintendo 64 titles on current-day HDTVs might be in luck.

Retroactive, lead by a developer known as Marshall, is aiming to produce custom-made boards that allow players to output picture from the console via HDMI, rather than the dated and default composite technology. Digital audio isn't currently supported, but Marshall has stated that he's looking into how that might work, requiring another hardware revision.

Careful soldering would be required for those who do want to give the tech a go; but Marshall isn't adverse to other modders purchasing in bulk and selling pre-modded Nintendo 64 consoles as part of a resell program.

Interested? Marshall has a mailing list available for pre-orders.

I need to see if gets rid of the blurry filter that's automatically applied on top of the graphics by the original hardware, first, before I would decide to make a purchase. It's unclear on all the screenshots I could see so far. (That filter that's most visible in games that run in 320x240... it's not as noticeable in games that run in 640x480)

This seems like a unnecessarily complicated, difficult and expensive way of doing what I've already managed to get set up for £4.

I could make this and sort out the sound but the only reason I can see anyone doing it is if they only had an HDMI port. In which case there are already (expensive) gadgets you can buy to do this.

But seeing as monitors generally have either VGA or dvi it can be done for £4. I'd do that, personally.

HDMI won't make an SD picture sharper btw. If anything it'll cause the picture to drop for a few seconds every now and then when it goes over the digital cliff.

Or maybe I've got that wrong but the point is that n64 can already be connected to almost any TV or monitor very cheaply and HDMI will not give a better picture it'll be exactly the same.

Monitors with only HDMI are rare. If ur in that position I sympathise because the solutions are expensive but there can't be many people in that position.
