Super Smash Bros Wii U, 3DS Release Date Periods on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

During Nintendo Direct this evening, Super Smash Bros director Mashiro Sakurai confirmed release periods for both Wii U and 3DS.

Both games will share certain features, like characters and other connectivity functionality, but will be available to buy at different times. Sakurai noted that the 3DS version, which will run at a solid 60fps in 3D (with the exception of assist trophies), will launch during Summer 2014. The Wii U  version, however, will touch down during Winter 2014.

Time to save those well earned pennies. Luigi has had his year. 2014 is the Year of Super Smash Bros!

Not good news to hear they are releasing so far apart, in my opinion. People that really want the game will get a 3DS instead of waiting and getting a WiiU, so I don't see it boosting WiiU sales as much as I was hoping.

Working like a fiend isn't very fun... and surprisingly isn't very fiendish either.

I'm cool with this. I'll have the 3DS version to tide me over, that I otherwise wouldn't have paid much attention to if they released simultaneously.

How it'll affect sales of the Wii U version is up for debate but that's for Nintendo to worry about.

I'm surprised that there's such a big time difference. It feels like they've chosen to delay the Wii U version for some reason? Still, it's always better to have a delay but a better final product!

Wii U games take far more time and resources to produce, so it shouldn't be that surprising. Considering how much they've shown of the Wii U version, it'll still be the definitive version of Smash and the one that the dedicated Smash fans will be playing, so it's great that they're not rushing it out. If the 3DS version is ready to go during summer, then it's understandable that they wouldn't want to delay it a finished product that the 3DS could actually use to keep some momentum after Kirby/Mario Golf in May.

I haven't noticed it myself until I read it somewhere but Nintendo has been subtly telling us the release windows all along. Notice how the 3DS version has red flames for summer and the Wii U version has blue ones for winter?
