Nintendo Wii U Trails Behind GameCube Sales on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Sales figures for the Wii U compared to the GameCube reveal a tough time ahead for Nintendo's home console.

Last week analyst David Gibson noted how around 70,000 Wii U consoles were sold during March, eclipsed by Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which both sold around 300,000 units for the month. The current performance of the Wii U in its second March on the market was also compared to previous Nintendo consoles, which tally up to:

  • Wii U (March 2014) - 70,000
  • Wii (March 2008) - 721,000
  • GameCube (March 2003) - 165,000
Whilst the difference is clear for March along, lifetime sales paint an even more dire picture for Wii U:
  • Wii U - Between 5 and 6 million units worldwide as of March 2014
  • Wii - About 25 million units worldwide as of March 2008
  • GameCube - About 9.5 million units worldwide as of March 2003
Do you think Wii U can recover this year?

I believe the SNES also had a start as bad as the WiiU - assuming my memory there is correct, recovering is possible, but not nesscerily likely.

I must admit I dont understand the lifetime figures incidently. They all came out on different months.....so why are we comparing to upto march for each? That gives each a different length of time onsale.
