Update: Nintendo have posted the first official images of what the Mario Kart 8 app could look like.
During the financial results briefing to investors, Iwata outlined plans for the Mario Kart 8 app, which will contain support for videos, tournament data and rankings for those who may not have access to a Nintendo Network ID, and those who are registered.

With plenty of online content, tournaments and videos to be available for the forthcoming Wii U racer, Nintendo is said to be planning on launching a "web app" for smartphones and tablets to offer connectivity to the game. Actual specifics of what the app would provide and how it would work are still to be confirmed, however.
