Update: Nintendo have posted the first official images of what the Mario Kart 8 app could look like.

During the financial results briefing to investors, Iwata outlined plans for the Mario Kart 8 app, which will contain support for videos, tournament data and rankings for those who may not have access to a Nintendo Network ID, and those who are registered.

Original Story: A report from Japanese newspaper Nikkei suggests a Mario Kart 8 app is on the way.

With plenty of online content, tournaments and videos to be available for the forthcoming Wii U racer, Nintendo is said to be planning on launching a "web app" for smartphones and tablets to offer connectivity to the game. Actual specifics of what the app would provide and how it would work are still to be confirmed, however.

Earlier today Nintendo of Japan posted new footage and TV adverts for Mario Kart 8.

It just has to have:

  • Miiverse support (read/write)
  • Tournament support (create/view)
  • Online Friends
as a minimum. Video replays would be a bonus imo.
