A Look at the Wii U Quick Load Option on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo have posted a revised look at how the Quick Boot menu function will work on Wii U.

The upcoming system update, expected before or during the summer season, will incorporate what Nintendo are describing as the "quick boot" menu. It'll instantly display a set of quick launch icons when a player switches on the GamePad, which will allow games and software to be run far quicker than going into the Wii U operating system. When selecting an option, the loader then prompts the player to select a user before diving into the software itself.

In the video, the menu appears within two seconds, with the splash screen of New Super Mario Bros. U showing up within ten.

What are your thoughts on the new Quick Boot menu setup?

Nice!

Really looking forward to this feature. The fact that Wii U will be the only games player on the market to offer a 'switch on, straight to game with no menus inbetween' is shameful. 3DS included. :/

Yeah this is brilliant and I'd be completely surprised if other consoles don't add this feature soon after. It skips all the unnecessary stuff (when you don't plan on using any menu features) and I can just jump into the game. This is great for stuff like MK 8 where we can jump in quicker for online matches.

How would you tell the console which game to boot without a screen on the controller to let you pick from what you have, though? The Wii U has this distinct advantage in the Gamepad being capable of some standalone stuff to tell display basic info and tell the console exactly what you want from it to skip all the unnecessary stuff.

Doesn't seem like you can check quickly if some of your friends are currently playing online so you could jump into their game effectively though, since it doesn't load the friends list.

The old fashioned way I guess; disk in machine - straight to game, no disk - system menu. Dunno why that stopped being the standard. Individual accounts probably had a hand in it. :/

Wouldn't be possible with download only games though, which are becoming more and more the standard, you'd have to pick which one you want to play
