Iwata Quizzed on Successors to Nintendo Wii U, 3DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata was asked whether Nintendo would be revealing new hardware within the next three years.

Investors quizzed Iwata on Nintendo's stance on developing successors to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and whether these systems would be released earlier than Nintendo expected.

He replied that "we are always developing new hardware" and admitted that it it's difficult to establish in public when the company intend on launching new hardware. Despite remaining discreet about the groups's plans, he wanted to assure investors that "we are not at a dead end of any kind in which we are out of ideas for developing new hardware."

Interestingly, Nintendo "already have a clear idea to some extent about the direction our next hardware is going to take," Iwata revealed.

What sorts of systems do you think Nintendo will release next?

Imo - has to be more of a home hub, going forward from Wii U and possibly have some sort of backwards compatibility with Wii U and Wii titles, but almost introduce it's own set of controllers and mechanisms.

Needs proper media functionality - BluRay player, decent media playback, promised video services - the Wii U was supposed to do all this, but Nintendo are still behind.

Definitely needs to take third party advice into account when it comes to CPU/GPU specs - I can't imagine Nintendo winning back third parties with gimped hardware yet again.

And launch with Mario Kart 9 and the inevitable Smash Bros. sequel, a 3D Mario game, Zelda title and a few well-known, mature third party titles.

But is there a future beyond Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U with the same console model? PS4's performance suggests so, but they may need to think beyond the plasic box.

BluRays pointless. Why pay your competitor for a redundant format?
Everything will be digital by then, it basically already is cept in the US. HD netflix , amazon, apple digital services are all pretty established now. Hell, Youtube supports 4K streams.

I am not even sure a media hub has much use sales wise - already a lot of new tvs have that built in.
On the other hand, unlike hardware, software is essentially costless to add, so why not?

Nah, its all about the games. Thats where Nintendo failed this time, and its how they can bounce back.
Well, that and a better (and more unique) core gimmick then a touchscreen.
