Mario Kart 8 Drops Down to 59fps in Performance Analysis on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Digital Foundry have uncovered some surprises when analysing the performance of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U.

During the Cubed3 playthrough and review of the game, framerate issues were nonexistent to the naked eye, with the game appearing to run at a solid 60fps in one or two players and at 30fps with three or four.

Eurogamer believes that, despite having a "phenomenal attention to detail", the game is "one that doesn't quite match the impossibly high level of polish" set by Nintendo.

The team uncovered that the game operates at 720p (1280x720) and is only scaled up to 1080p if the output screen supports it. The report noted that with the lack of anti-aliasing, there have been "obvious stair-stepping and pixel-crawling artifacts throughout most scenes," something that had been pointed out in our own review. Despite this, it does "spoil an otherwise magnificent visual package".

As for framerate performance, Digital Foundry states that, during normal gameplay, the game continually drops down to 59fps and "once it is seen, it can't really be unseen," oddly only happening when CPU racers are on the track.

Despite this, Eurogamer believe that the issues "shouldn't impact the experience for most people" and not to "let these minor polish issues keep you away from the game - this is Mario Kart at its best and brightest."

Do you think the framerate issues/graphical problems could really detract from the Mario Kart 8 experience?

Better cancel your Wii U order while you can.

Ha, joking aside, have you ordered stuff from Tesco before? How good are the odds of it arriving in time for launch day? I ordered my copy from an Austrian retailer that has its HQ just a few hours away from where I live and says they'll dispatch it on Thursday. Would be great if the whole gang had it in time for Friday night.

Not sure if I've ever pre-ordered anything from Tesco before, but they're usually good with delivery. The order is expected delivered by Saturday 31st, but doesn't mean it won't come on the 30th. But it's hard to say because it was one of these super hot deals that went around the web, so could be a lot of people waiting for it. I dunno, I'll just have to see. We'll have to make plans anyway for more organised get-togethers, so we try to get 12 people with some star rewards etc.

59 fps!?

Incredibly nitpicky. Yes, there are some murky textures in places, but the game is fucking mint!

They're doing their job by pointing out all the little details, which is good to know, but would someone honestly notice a single frame difference? They say once it's been seen, it can't be unseen, but really? That's some good eyes if so.

Honestly, I would hate to have an eye for technical details like that. I can't even imagine how many technical shortcomings some of my favourite games might have that are borderline impossible to notice for a regular gamer.

I can't imagine that during an action packed racing game they are actually noticing a 1 frame-per-second drop with their naked eyes.

It's probably more psychological. They found out it happens with their special equipment and now they imagine they see it all the time.

Indeed, that level of Obsessive Compulsive tends to ruin more than enhance the experience & it's one of the main reasons I don't praise or find any true value in focusing on graphics. I feel sorry for those that do since they give themselves headaches for no good reason & miss out on playing truly enjoyable games for no reason at all.

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

who cares! i would buy this game even if every gaming website on the web gave it scores of 3 out of 10 and they used mode 7.
