Super Smash Bros. Wii U to Support GameCube Controllers on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo have officially announced support for GameCube controllers in the new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

In a Tweet and during a promotional video for the Super Smash Bros. Invitational tournament, the new peripheral was revealed. Supporting four controllers, the adapter hooks up to the USB slots on the front of the Wii U.

More details on the GameCube adapter is expected at this year's E3 Expo, as those who compete in the tournament will be allowed to use GameCube controllers if they wish.

What do you think of Nintendo's approach to supporting GameCube controllers on Wii U?

Pretty cool. I personally haven't played with a Gamecube controller since I last played Melee many years ago, but this is awesome for those that love their GCN controllers for Smash.

I wonder three things:

  • Will Gamecube controllers work in Wii mode for Wii games?
  • Will Gamecube games work in Wii mode natively?
  • Will we be seeing Gamecube Virtual Console games soon?

Points 1 and 3 are purely software dependent. Point 2 might depend on the type of disc drive used (I don't know the mechanics there if mini-discs can be used in any drive or not).

A hardware accessory for a discontinued controller is unlikely for just one game.
So, yes Id say 3 is extremely likely. Either that or Gamecube re-releases in some form.

I have one of these for PC, works well:

Looks like the official Nintendo version for Wii U may have well been modelled off this one! Am keen on the idea, great to have options.

Can smell a GameCube VC coming - they should do it. And also release more VC titles is general, how hard can it be?

Awesome. Can get my white GC controller out the cupboard and back in use! Smilie

I recently purchased one of those Gamecube to PC USB adapters as well - and found that it works on Mac (OS X and OS Classic) and Linux as well!  It's simply wonderful: I can play all sorts of games with a Gamecube controller now, (and every action/adventure game is more enjoyable to play with it).

I'm hoping that Nintendo makes it possible to use the GC controller not just for GC games on the Virtual Console and SSB, but also for other existing and future Wii U titles.
