E3 2014 | Link may not have been in Zelda Wii U Trailer on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has teased that Link may not be the focus of the latest Wii U trailer.

The latest chapter in the series was revealed in a short gameplay snippet during Nintendo's Digital Event this week; a vibrant cell-shaded HD world. In the short sequence, the assumed protagonist leaps into action to fire an arrow into an enemy, and many would assume that this character would be a new incarnation of Link.

Interestingly, however, Aonuma said "no one explicitly said that that was Link" in an interview.

Could the new start of the game be someone else entirely, Zelda perhaps?

My theory now is that this may be Zelda trying to disguise herself as Link, for whatever reason. By the bow usage, you can tell that the person is right-handed, which they would only do to Link if the game used Wii Motion+, something I'm not really expecting them to do again, as it's either all-in or none of that. Much like Skyward Sword only worked so well because it was designed around it. The horse also doesn't look like Epona, which would have a white mane as seen in many other games.

One other thing is that there may be multiple Links, which would make sense with his vague statement, because us assuming it's Link would mean that there's only one Link, that's it.

Just throwing some ideas out here, who knows if Aonuma is just trolling everybody for the hell of it.

Great ideas SL - like the multiple Link parts, and especially if this isn't gameplay as such (but still using the in-game engine). Could end up having to face off against multiple Links, which is interesting.

Well spotted, am curious to see more, particularly with the bow-usage. Would be interesting to see a Zelda game where the sword may not neccesarilly be the primary weapon. Always loved the bow, so would be interesting to see how it all works out.

I remembered Aonuma mentioned ideas for multiplayer last E3, so I thought there could be multiple Links.

Doesn't look like a girl to me, but neither did Sheik in OOT, so who knows.
