E3 2014 | It was Link in the Legend of Zelda Wii U Trailer on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that the character shown in the Wii U Legend of Zelda trailer is indeed, Link.

Despite a tease that the new character shown in the footage of the Wii U game this week may not necessarily be series protagonist Link, Aonuma confirmed that "it's a rumour" and that "that comment I made jokingly."

It seems like it has kind of taken off where people are saying 'oh it's a female character' and it just kind of grew. But my intent in saying that was humour. You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement.

Aonuma is urging fans not to get too into the design of the character, because "Link represents the player in the game."

What do you think of the new design for Link in the upcoming Wii U Legend of Zelda game?

Kind of shocked that whoever interviewed him didn't catch that he was, in fact, joking. Just having a quote from him on this doesn't really convey anything unless a "(laughs)" or such is added.

At least the endless arguing about this on the NeoGAF topic might stop now. Smilie Had some hilarious posts, though, like someone thinking his earrings are proof of being a girl. Classic.

This also means that Link is right-handed...perhaps they're using Motion Plus after all?

lol what a legend. A girl, honestly. Love his classic look.

There is something to be said that he was using a bow and wearing a cape, something Zelda has done in previous games, and guessing this game takes place before skyward sword, what if, this link, was somehow both link and zelda... maybe being the barer of both courage and wisdom. Ofcourse we wont know until we play the game!

Was thinking this too.

The only thing that still makes me doubt it is that they would be making a game that's not playable with the pack-in controller, something I can't recall Nintendo doing for a single-player game. Maybe they'll figure out a way to have both styles of gameplay without the motion controls merely replacing the attack button like Twilight Princess on Wii, but I'm finding that hard to imagine. I suppose this should be cleared up whenever we see gameplay, since this was an in-game cutscene for the most part.

Speaking of gameplay, I'd love some more in-depth uses for the bow. Always thought it deserved more than just being an item alongside others.

Or maybe its bundled with a controller? a Wiimote++ maybe? Smilie

Id certainly welcome SkywardSword controls back. At least for some items. (I think think TP was better for aiming the bow though).

I'm hoping for optional WiiMote+ controls. That way the combat wouldn't play out like a puzzle like in SS, but we still get the immersive 1:1 motion controls.

Because I also expect the Upad to be used a lot, I imagine playing it like Pikmin 3. Upad on the table or next to you on the couch, WiiMote+Nunchuck in your hands. You can then easily switch to the Upad when you need to (to set out a course for your horse? To scan your environment with some kind of Lense of Truth? To control the Beetle?).

Anyway, good to know it's still Link. I love his new look, he looks like a traveller like I was hoping in advance!

I have mixed feelings on the Motion+ controls coming back. On the one hand, I really did like them in Skyward Sword. They were fun and for the most part worked fairly well. On the other hand, I just bought Ocarina of Time 3DS, and I have to say it's nice to just sit back and play a Zelda game without any hand swinging. Starting to realize that I could take motion controls or leave 'em, even when they're done well.

Motion controls for things like the bow and arrow and hook shot will be missed, however.

I don't think I'd want them to try to use both the U-Pad and Motion+ though; that might become cumbersome. Stick to one control scheme and build the game accordingly.

Just give multiple control options!!!

I'd like to have Motion+ support.....though make it work for lefties this time Nintendo as I am one. Who knows maybe the whole "don't get too attached to the character design since Link represents the Player" makes me think there COULD be some sort of character creator implemented for this Zelda iteration. Obviously it'll have SOME limitations so it stays true to what we perceive Link should be, but that would be pretty cool & allow Link to feel even more connected to the player controlling him!!

Do you guys when you start a new game of Zelda, name the Character Link or do you name him after your own name!?!Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Usually Link, or "Cubed3" - tried "Big Willy" once, but got tired of it by the end of the Deku Tree lols.

I start off with Link but if the Zelda game has some sort of Hard/Master mode I will use my name for that.
