The team behind Splatoon have described the development steps for the new Wii U multiplayer third-person shooter.
Tsubasa Sakaguchi and Hisashi Nogami recalled just how the project came together, which originally begun as as prototype where players took control of four black and four white blocks. These shapes would shoot each other to try and take control of their respective territories.
"Everyone played that prototype, and we all had a great reaction to it," so the team braved bringing the game to senior Nintendo designers Miyamoto, Tezuka and Eguchi.
There were "a few back and fourths" and Splatoon was born. Sakaguchi realised that "this could really be something" when players took different tactics, with some going on direct and others trying to "cover as much territory as possible."
He wants to make sure "action of spraying the ink around feels really really good" as the priority, "having it splash on the ground and splatter everywhere."
