Rumour: Management Scheming to Scrap Iwata? on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Rumour: An insider report has suggested that there could well be inner turmoil within the walls of Nintendo HQ.

It's no secret that there have been problems at the home of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, with the underperforming Wii U and a dip in profits during the last quarter.

A report from Japanese press that claims to have insider knowledge (translation via NeoGAF) suggests that there is a "shared recognition that 'Iwata is the culprit'" and that there is a strong desire from within the company to bring key franchises to smartphones.

The report continues that Iwata is vetoing the idea, given the company's strength in hardware/software development. The insider suggests that "there is nobody left who can defy Iwata" and there are "frequent rumors that part of the management is scheming to get rid of Iwata."

Do you think Iwata can guide Nintendo back to good health?

The day Iwata leaves Nintendo and people who want to "bring key franchises to smartphones" take control, that's the day it'll all be over.

A lot of people who hate Iwata and think getting rid of him would turn Nintendo into the next PS4-powerlevel console developer don't seem to understand the focused state that the Japanese video game industry is in right now.

Japanese Smartphone Gaming Market has eclipsed traditional software/hardware combined.

Nintendo's shareholders and non-development managers don't care about turning Nintendo into the next Sony (who are dangerously close to bankruptcy in Japan), they as Japanese businessmen want Nintendo to compete with the most successful Japanese entertainment business right now, the people with the power to decide the next Nintendo Head care more about creating the next Puzzle & Dragon than making good video games.

So for those who love Nintendo for the video games they make and want them to keep being able to do that, Iwata remaining Nintendo's president until he can select his own successor is in our best interests. I'm sure he can return Nintendo to relative health, and in a way that won't sacrifice the reason their fans love them.

Honestly, both 3DS and Wii U just need more regular games - and Nintendo should and can explore genres that they haven't touched lately - were's the Mario sports games for Wii U? Any turn-based RPGs in the house?

I still believe VC has a place on mobile platforms, but Nintendo should be clever about it and make sure people either need a Nintendo Network account (and therefore hardware) or make it so that you would need to buy the game first on Wii U or 3DS VC in order to play it on mobile.

I'm pretty bored of Mario Kart 8, didn't quite have the same draw that MK Wii did, unfortunately.

Leave Nintendo out of the shovelware ocean that plagues phone games but I FULLY SUPPORT the idea of giving Iwata the boot!! He's made far too many bad calls for Nintendo & it's cost the company DEARLY in the eyes of the public.

They should make Barack Obama president of Nintendo. Smilie

I would have to disagree. Iwata brought us the GBA SP (first major gaming device with rechargeable battery), the DS (the most successful video game hardware of all time), the Wii (the fifth most successful video game hardware of all time), the 3DS (currently the best-selling hardware of this gaming generation), and served as producer on 5 of the 10 best-selling video games of all time. The Wii U is the first hardware under Iwata's direction that isn't performing well. We'll see how Amiibo goes, but if it's anywhere near as successful as Skylanders or Disney Infinity, that'll be another success under Iwata's belt.

I definitely think Iwata needs to listen more to some of his younger employees (like the guys behind Splatoon, for example) but booting the guy because the Wii U isn't doing well after only 1.5 years on the market is pretty extreme, considering the massive successes he brought the company immediately prior to it.

Nintendo public doomsaying goes all the way back to the GameCube, which was before Iwata even took over. The eyes of the public can suck it, they clearly don't know what the hell they're talking about. People want Nintendo to be failing because Nintendo has always maintained the position of a "must-have second device" in both consoles and handhelds, and it would be so much more convenient for people to play Zelda on their PC/Xbox and Pokemon on their iPhone. The truth, however, is that Nintendo is one of the most successful corporations in history. They've been around since the 1800s; they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Personally, I think Virtual Console up to GBA (maybe DS) and Nintendo 64 for smartphones is a good idea. Anything later than that would be corporate suicide. Nintendo could benefit from entering the phone market (I wouldn't say they need to, however, any more than Sony or Microsoft do) but with Amiibo there's a huge opportunity. Disney Infinity and Skylanders have the benefit of being on all systems. Amiibo won't have that advantage; making it compatible with certain iPhone/Android mini-games would be a great solution to that problem.

Then we would have to replace the "please understand" meme with a "let me be clear" one Smilie

If you still think booting Iwata is a good thing even after seeing this article (and hopefully reading my previous post) then you're considerably blinded by your dislike of him and you might want to rethink why you hate him and what losing him would really mean.

Iwata is being pressured by all sides to turn Nintendo into a smartphone focused company, in an industry increasingly obsessed with smartphone games, in a country where smartphone games are the dominant entertainment and every developer and entertainment company is trying to create the next Puzzle & Dragon.

If Iwata is booted, he is going to be replaced with someone who does all that, not someone who fulfils every dream the fandom has.

At this point in time, if you're a Nintendo fan who strongly dislikes smartphone games, Iwata is the sole core that protects the Nintendo you care about, no matter how much you dislike him.

I feel the way I do about Iwata because he has been one of the primary obstacles to Nintendo adopting a more fluid (but STILL safe) online experience. I don't know to how many developers they've said no to but there has been A LOT of third party games Nintendo should've fought harder to get. I know not all the bad press Nintendo gets is deserved, but there's a fairly large portion that they are guilty of & some of Iwata's are directly to blame.

Make sure when you guys talk about executives you don't approach blindly; but rather take a few steps back & view them objectively with the future of the company in mind.

It's kind of tiring hearing these rumours all the time and for fans to have to leap to his defence...

I'd like to think Nintendo heads are more cunning than to oust him in such a way? His approval rating is high enough to keep him there for at least another year and beyond.

I have just spent a fair bit of time over in Asia and seeing the amount of people on smartphones are unreal. Just like going through London on a morning commute i'd say 90% of people are on smartphones in Japan. With that said though, my Streetpass was going through the roof, i had to keep constantly clearing the 10 out and another 10 would go back in.

When the 3DS was announced I was hoping that it would have telecommunications built in somehow. I nearly even purchased the Vita3G for the Skype function. If 'Nintendo' are so keen for smartphone integration then why not take the game to that market and create a smartphone themselves. As mentioned before and by numerous others that the day Nintendo put key franchises on competitor platforms its the end for them.

It would be the beginning of the end as people will hold off buying Nintendo platforms because they know that these franchises are going to be available to them by other means. The 3DS is a great console and with Pokemon and Smash Bros coming out later this year i can see a massive surge in sales. Plus i saw 2DS' going for 65quid in Tesco back home the other day so I just don't understand how Nintendo will fail to shift another couple of million units before the end of the year!

Nintendo don't need to put games on smartphones (they can't even put their own friggin games from decades ago on their own friggin hardware as it is let alone on the App Store or whatever else!). What Nintendo need to do is hurry up and emulate/recreate (or do whatever) and put their ALL of their classic games to purchase on the eShop now! I am not talking about drip feeding us one game at a time, i am talking about putting all of their games on the eShop NOW! Unify the accounts of Wii U/3DS/Wii purchases and you'll get some profits for very little work.

Or if not perhaps create something like a monthly fee based account like how PS+ or the WWE Network does! As a consumer and avid fan I am frustrated with Nintendo because of these things, I can only imagine how shareholders feel!

......*sigh*.....and relax.....

So.. you hate Iwata because he's doing the right thing, but not doing it right enough?

Your second paragraph is literally proving my point. You need to take a few steps back and objectively see how Iwata is protecting the future of Nintendo, because he wants to develop Nintendo hardware and software and is one of the only Japanese industry members who still wants to do that.

Because right now, the alternative is not "PS-quality online and 3rd party relations", that is not something that any Japanese developer besides Sony (who are more focused on western market and are failing in Japan) cares about. Once again, Nintendo are being pressured on all sides to become a smartphone game developer.

If Iwata goes, no higher ups in the company give a heck about making online better and improving third party relations because that's not what the Japanese game industry care about. They will turn Nintendo into a smartphone dev if Iwata goes. That is not a possibility, that is the reality.

I'm not defending Iwata because I think he's a great infallible guy, I'm defending him because for the Nintendo fan who likes playing good Nintendo games on Nintendo consoles, sticking with him until he selects his successor is our only option if we want to keep playing Nintendo hardware and software.

If Iwata is "booted" like you wished to happen, Nintendo would quickly become the next Capcom, SEGA or Square, focusing the majority of resources to smartphone gaming and little else. This is not a rumour, this is the current truth of the Japanese game market.

Wow, I really hope this isn't true. It's incredibly disturbing. Iwata isn't perfect, but I still feel he's the right man for the job. Very much so.

Nintendo fully supporting smartphones... ? *shutters* I fear that would be the beginning of the end of Nintendo.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

So apparently, the "insider source" making these claims is actually a random user on NeoGAF making random claims that for some reason got picked up by a Japanese website as being some kind of industry insider information.

It's probably this guy:
http://kotaku.com/nintendo-investor-i-do-not-understand-video-games-1599625657

Even if the rumours are false the whole "world of video game analysts" are pressuring Nintendo (or at least trying to influence) to put their games on the smart phone platforms.

I hope Nintendo stay strong, i wouldn't be a fan of Nintendo games on other platforms at all. Its the age old tale that it will happen eventually but Nintendo always tend to pull these types of things out of the bag!

I don't get these types of rumours though especially when you consider the financial difficulties that Sony are in. At least Nintendo have got money in the bank!

I will admit I am a Nintendo fan. I have been a fan since 1986 playing Mario ,the first Zelda, and Mega Man.
Later with Castlevania , Final Fantasy (the first one ever wich I still have that works) and Metroid just to name a few. Nintedo time and time again has been able to show me real quality, commitment and dedication to its gamers. They make games that 20 years later yor still excited about and love to play. I ve made my kids into fans and mabey one day the will be saying to there grand kids how the remember    how wii u was revolutionary.  Also how no one else had this type of technoogy combined with games that were truly ahead of its time.  I believe Nintendo invented the portable game system, the game pad, and full motion gaming and now with the first touch screen home console system.  Nintendo has had slumps before virtual boy, original gameboy, the amazing Nintendo 64 and even the Gamecube. Nintendo has slumps but the Billion Dollar company knows how to bounce back. I feel that Iwata leading the company can do that. Plus really look at the future of consols and were they need to be. I doint feel Nintendos future soly lies in cell phones.Mabey when there ready they can create a new ip that can be on cell phone to generate revinue. But ploting to over throw the leader is to me childish and not wise. I feel as the Japanese would say the culprets have no honor.......
