What The Legend of Zelda

Photos from the Hyrule Warriors art book have emerged, including a look at a female Link.

The Legend of Zelda spin-off adventure for Wii U has already hit some stores in Japan, and some fans have posted photos of the accompanying artwork book. As well as concept illustrations for the large array of weapons, unused outfits and official art, there's a glimpse of what hero Link could look like as a female.

Yech...gender swap concepts have always been disturbing to me. Either you're a man OR a woman....there is no reason to trade teams or play for the same one you're on if you catch my meaning. That's my personal view on it anyways.

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

I hope to play as a female Link one day.

As in cosplay or PC RPG character creator way?

As in play as a female in a Zelda game way. Have the option to choose. Would hardly have any effect on the game at all. Everyone's happy. One day, anyway.

Every Link is a different person you know? Some Links aren't even connected in any way. There's no reason a female Link couldn't happen.

Personally hope it happens someday, I don't care whether it's something you choose at the beginning or not, I think it'd be very interesting to force the player to play as her in an amazing new Zelda to introduce the idea to a wide audience.

And hey maybe it'd prove to people that playing as a girl doesn't have to be a big deal.

I'd much rather play as Zelda or Link's sister in a world where Link is still reincarnated, but something happened to him. Wouldn't that be so much more interesting than just having a gender swap for one of gaming's most popular icons? Reincarnation or not, for me Link is very much an established character with certain traits I don't want to be changed. As soon as you bring in customisation, it's your character and not Link anymore. This isn't like something like Mass Effect with Commander Shepard either, where it's an IP that was only introduced last generation with customisation right from the start. Here, we're talking about meddling with the face of one of the most legendary and long-running franchises in gaming.

Not to mention, if Nintendo were to do this only once, it would be an expected feature in any future Zelda games. Trust me on that. I realise this doesn't seem to be a popular opinion, but that's just how I feel as a long-time fan of the franchise. I welcome a lot of changes Nintendo has in store for The Legend of Zelda, but this wouldn't be one.

See no reason why the hero couldn't be reincarnated into a female body one day. A game where the hero is female. Link looks like a female as it is anyway. FemLink can look basically the same as male Link, as seen above. He's an avatar with hardly a personality. Changing his gender wouldn't mean messing with his traits much at all, imo. A one-off FemLink in a future Zelda. Hope it happens.

Make Zelda as a male in exchange I say ^^ !! And let the courageous girl save her man, for a change. Changing her gender for the sake of changing it, you might as well go the whole way and change it all I say, make it worthwhile Smilie.

It's definitely an interesting debate to see what people have in mind.

Personally, I think it would just make a change to see a FemLink saving still the Princess Zelda.

I'd really like to see more female antagonists again at some point. Oracle of Ages had Veran, and we've had Twinrova and such, but Ganondorf/Ganon has always been behind them. A badass female villain would be sweet.

Can't see a reason why anyone could not want it to happen. It wouldn't even be Link, Link is a boys name, she'd be a new female lead in a Zelda game that's all and there's nothing wrong with that.

So yeah, make it happen! I'm all for it!

Yeah I agree that would be nice, it'd definitely help female players feel more linked to the character they're controlling which is one of the reasons Miamoto doesn't want Link to speak (Miamoto feels silent characters convey a better connection to gamers than characters with spoken dialog & their own personalities & ways of doing things. When a character is asked a question & the response is left to the player it feels more immersive). It'd be GREAT if Nintendo took that option of choice to that level for Zelda Wii U. Make Link more like the player controlling him or her....that'd be EPIC!!
