Nintendo Confirms New 3DS Will Be Region-Locked on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

On Tuesday, a rumour was started that the New 3DS would be region free. Fans have been clamoring for this change for quite a while, but Nintendo has yet to budge on their policy. Today, Nintendo has stated the New 3DS will be region-locked.

While the announcement isn't unexpected, it still leaves many disappointed. Coming right on the heels of Atlus delaying Shin Megami Tensei IV  in Europe, the announcement only puts the spotlight on the restrictions of such a policy.

Bugger. Shame really - was one of the best aspects of the DS and GBA/C

Shame, I was looking forward to the outrage if region free gaming was exclusive to the New 3DS. Smilie

Why were people even treating that Nintendomination guy like he knew anything? The guy chats shit. Feel sorry for anyone that got their hopes up. It was plain obvious - this is Nintendo.

Region locking is either price fixing or a sort of discrimination - either would fully justify people hacking systems enough to get games they arnt allowed too.

I'm still torn between selling my old unit to make myself some money after getting the new one... or keeping my old one to softmod it once the new upcoming homebrew channel gets released on it, which should allow for making the system region free ^_^ !! What to do, what to do ^^ ?

But yeah, it was expected that the new one would be region locked as well Smilie.

Are there really plans to make 3DS region free through modding? Proper up for that.

As far as I've heard it's part of the possibilities of what the upcoming homebrew channel for it could allow (name as far as I know is not definitive, could be renamed something else).

Gonna have to keep my eye on that. Modded PSP is one of the greatest things in gaming. Gets used all the time still. Wii was pretty awesome too.

Seems like the devs behind this are pretty darn serious about preventing their work being used to play illegal backups of copyrighted software too, which is very fine by me. I would have hoped for allowing the install of retail games onto the SD card so I can purchase my physical carts and install them (Iknow there's the eShop, but I wish you could own a physical cart and still get to enjoy your whole collection of games with you wherever you go, but Nintendo wants you to pay twice if you want to do that Smilie), but I guess it would be opening the door to piracy, so I'm fine if they can't do it.

Yeah, all the custom stuff people can do is amazing, so it's well worth it just for that. Hopefully they get it out there soon.

Never expected it to be region-free. If Nintendo go region-free again, I'd imagine it'd be with their next handheld.
