Microsoft Acquires Minecraft Studio Mojang on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

It's official: Microsoft has purchased Mojang, the studio behind the extremely popular game Minecraft.

Despite Shigeru Miyamoto himself recently teasing that Minecraft might reach the 3DS and Wii U, it now seems less likely, if not impossible.

There might be a shred of hope, however, as Microsoft has pledged to continue to support versions of the game appearing on competitor's platforms, something not seen often in the games industry. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's Xbox division, said, "...we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms - including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC."

Still, new versions of the game for Nintendo's platforms are unlikely at best.

The three co-founders of Mojang are said to be leaving the studio, with most of the rest of the employees staying put.

Happened with Lionhead, too.

Notch says he's done making games entirely, though.

Early signs are good though - Microsoft said they value it as an open platform and feel it was the community that made the game so successful.
Initial fears that it would be a closed no-Mod Xbox exclusive seem unfounded.

Minecraft is the 3rd biggest selling game of all time, so despite the huge sum they paid for it, it might well be worth it for them in the long run.

Nope.
He specifically IS working on games but his own small indie projects - he doesn't want to manage any big things again. In fact, he said if any future things he does become a big hit he will leave them too Smilie
