Sakurai on Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U Naming on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai recently commented on the naming decisions behind the latest set of games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

The latest games, which went under the project names of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, kept their titles once hitting retail, and it's lead some fans to wonder why Nintendo hadn't changed the names to something more in line with past titles.

Games like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, had, arguably a more distinct feel to their names.

Speaking to Japanese magazine Famitsu, Sakurai noted how the decision was to "avoid confusion among consumers," but noted how the "for" in the titles could well be seen as a number four - Super Smash Bros 4, perhaps.

Do you think Nintendo should have had different names for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS?

How hard would it have been to call them

"Super Smash Bros Universe" and "Super Smash Bros Dimensions" to play on words for both systems?

THat took me 10 seconds to think of, and they are more appealing than "for 3dS" and "for WiiU"

Considering the non-conventional title, I think it could well be seen as potentially more confusing for consumers, especially when a consumer may not realise it's a new entry without a new subtitle. What's to say a consumer won't just think "it's just the original Smash Bros., but on 3DS!"

I guess Nintendo in general just haven't been on fire with naming lately huh.

Why not "NEW Super Smash Bros" that would be a great title!

"SUPER SMASH BROS ULTRA FOR WII U AND 3DS"  would be a great name. ( WII ULTRA ANYONE??)

Keep in mind that this is the same company that instead of calling their newest system The Stream, or Beem, or even just Wii 2, they went with the most confusing and lame sounding option possible. Not to mention calling it the New 3ds.
