Sakurai Considered Having All Characters Unlocked at the Start in Smash Bros. on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Super Smash Bros. producer Masahiro Sakurai is back with an insider look, noting how he considered having everyone unlocked at the start.

One of the key parts of the series, yet alone most games, is unlockable content. A fair few players today would likely agree, though, that in the "good old days," this content required a fair bit more commitment and bruised thumbs to obtain.

As for the likes of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Sakurai admitted that he considered "just opening up all the fighters from the start", but left unlockable fighters for those who enjoy the "Challenger Approaching" segments.

He did admit that he feels that "they come a decent amount easier than in previous titles," however.

Unlocks aside, Sakurai notes how Super Smash Bros. is a franchise that can be played "long after you've unlocked everyone," so doesn't feel as if it's a "big problem."

Do you think characters should have been unlocked at the start?

For those that had already unlocked all the characters on the 3DS version, they should have all been unlocked from the start on the Wii U version. This could have been done by connecting the 3DS. I didn't enjoy having retread what I had already done a month or so before.

When I were young I would've said that they should've remained locked.

Due to my current lifestyle and the occasions in which I play SSB so is the answer that I think they should be unlocked. Because SSB is mainly a multiplayer game, all characters should be unlocked as it makes it easier for people to initially and easily chose the main that fits them best and not dependent on whenever or not their potential main is unlocked already or not.

The difference between illusion and reality is vague to the one who suffers from the former and questionable for the one suffering form the later.

I for one am glad that there are still some secret characters. I love the feeling of surprise at getting them, and they are easy to get now so it's the best of both worlds.

However I agree that there should be an option to not have to unlock things again if you already have them.

Actually, the most frustrating unlockables by far in Smash 4 are not the characters or stages, but the Custom moves. I'll probably never end up trying most characters' custom movesets because they're such a tedious pain to get compared to most content in the game..

Totally agree with Marzy that if you had them unlocked in either version, it should unlock them in the other.

But definitely wish the vast majority of them were locked. Unlocking characters has always been one of the best things about these kinda games. It's a bit shitty these days that most fighters give you everything off the bat. Spend some time unlocking your faves - makes the feeling that much better when you finally get to play as them.

Frankly, I wish all of the 8 originals were the only starters, then unlock the rest. How fun would it be to unlock like 40+ characters? For me, great. Even if it's piss easy, it's still fun.

Wanted more of a challenge this time - half the newcomers were already unlocked?! Would be good to have "?" spaces to show the max roster, really get people hunting down how to unlock these characters.

Things like "complete adventure mode with X number of characters / complete 50 Smash Battles / Clear Event 43" would be great.

Felt it was piss easy this time. Whatever happened to really working on a game to unlock stuff?

I think they should have had:

  • An option when you boot up either version for the first time - "Unlock all Secret Characters" / Yes / No
  • If no, you go about unlocking in the traditional way, if yes, it unlocks everyone.

How fun would it be unlock like 40+ characters? For me, great. Even if it's piss easy, it's still fun.

Would be awesome! Maybe even a difficulty levels for unlockable characters, instead:

- Easy: Unlocks everyone instantly.
- Normal: Default unlocks (versus matches, simple events)
- Hard: Starters only, rest locked and must be unlocked under harder difficulties.

One awesome feature of DOA5 (I don't know if any other fighters do this, but some might), is the option to turn on all characters unlocked in Exhibition mode, which is designed with local multiplayer/tournaments in mind.

It means anyone can boot up a copy of the game on a fresh install/system with no data, and immediately play a tourney/local MP with their fave characters by turning Exhibition on.

For the competitive players, it's a cracking feature, and I'd certainly recommend other fighters to follow suit.

I like the idea of ? tiles on character screen, with tougher unlock requirements that tell you what to do.

Totally agree with this. That feature is a golden middle road. I like middle roads! Smilie

The difference between illusion and reality is vague to the one who suffers from the former and questionable for the one suffering form the later.

It was way too easy to unlock the characters. I was very dissapointed about this even though I knew the roster before I got the game I still would have like to have the characters to be harder to unlock. I remember I got a character really late on in Brawl, I think it was Wolf and I was like "whaaaat!", it got me a bit psyched!

I wish the the fights themselves were a bit harder as well, I think I unlocked a character or two on the new ones by sudden death which was dissapoinitingly easy!

There's no way Nintendo could handle this that satisfies me and doesn't alienate those that want immediate or fast unlocks. All suggestions so far still have one big problem for me; it doesn't feel anywhere near as special to unlock characters on higher difficulties or at all, if there's a mode that has everything unlocked right away. I mean, why even bother at that point...Smilie

Depends if you fancy a challenge or not. These days I have so much money to spend on games but as teenager I had to either hunt down games cheap or preowned (without the internet like kids do these days Smilie

Either way, for some people out there Smash Bros might be the only game that they have for a while or even until next Xmas or Birthday so some would fancy the challenge of unlocking...
