3DS is continuing to gain momentum, Satoru Iwata highlighted during the latest financial results.
Iwata begun by confirming that 3DS hardware sales have now topped 50.41 million units, with Nintendo having "an overwhelmingly large presence as a platform with a 3D-projection function," despite there being other hardware out there that can produce 3D images.
There was some slowing of 3DS hardware/software sales due to intervals between the release of key titles since Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, but Nintendo were able to claw back performance with the New Nintendo 3DS in October last year in Japan, November in Australia, plus key releases.
Nintendo also achieved five double-million sellers for the period July to December 2014, the first time for a dedicated video game platform to achieve this record since 2000.
Nintendo also saw success with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, reaching 6.19 million units by the end of last year. Iwata noted that the series is not as well known in Europe, but has picked up "thanks to word-of-mouth."
Monster duo Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire have also performed exceptionally well, shipping 9.31 million units globally since launch.
