3DS Update Patches Region Free Trick on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo has introduced a new firmware update for Nintendo 3DS which has patches the existing Region-Free trick.

Bringing the system up to version 9.5.0-23U, the main part of the update is to offer "further improvements to overall system stability" and also "minor adjustments" to enhance the user experience.

However, it seems that Nintendo have also patched an exploit which allowed players to sample the delights of games released in regions outside their own Nintendo 3DS'. Previously, players were able to use an exploit on the console's web browser to essentially run games purchased from other regions, a useful feature for titles specific to Japan, for example.

Have you updated your Nintendo 3DS yet?

Why don't they just patch out the region lock. We all know it's software controlled. They just don't like people to import games even though they still pay for them.

I own all the consoles, ask me anything

Is there any good argument for region-locking these days?

This update also blocked numerous hacking exploits for Pokemon Shuffle and the mainline games, which was probably its overall purpose. I'm willing to bet the former would've lost a lot more money for Nintendo than the Region lock bypass ever could've.

They didn't patch the browser exploits until the Pokémon shuffle debacle. That should tell you that Nintendo didn't have anything too major against the exploit until then. The injection of roms inside VC games wasn't too big a deal, it was so unconvenient that it wasn't very useful, and you still needed to buy at least one VC game to put in effect, I don't think they must have lost any substantial sales while this was feasible. Then the hack of the Pokémon games didn't affect sales either, nor did the region free hack. Pokémon Shuffle was what pushed it too far. Who knows? They may have had the fix ready all along and ready to be pushed to the older system in case they pushed it too far.
