How did the amiibo characters/figures come about? It all came down to a journey taken by Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata.
Back in 2013, the company president was sitting on a train toward Tokyo, pondering plans for the Japanese gaming giant. During the trip, Iwata began sketching a line of physical toys with built-in chips that would connect to Nintendo's different systems.
From then, he put together a four-page pitch to engineers and the rest is history. The result, released late last year, are a growing collection of NFC-powered figures called amiibo. It's not the first, though, as both Disney and Activision had capitalised on the technology since 2011.
At the end of 2014, Nintendo had sold close to 6 million figures.
How many amiibo figures have you collected so far?
