Iwata Came up with amiibo Idea on a Train on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

How did the amiibo characters/figures come about? It all came down to a journey taken by Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata.

Back in 2013, the company president was sitting on a train toward Tokyo, pondering plans for the Japanese gaming giant. During the trip, Iwata began sketching a line of physical toys with built-in chips that would connect to Nintendo's different systems.

From then, he put together a four-page pitch to engineers and the rest is history. The result, released late last year, are a growing collection of NFC-powered figures called amiibo. It's not the first, though, as both Disney and Activision had capitalised on the technology since 2011.

At the end of 2014, Nintendo had sold close to 6 million figures.

How many amiibo figures have you collected so far?

I have just one. The only one released yet that I want. Rosalina. I sincerely like her, she's a great role model, hence why I felt obligated to get her Amiibo. Smilie

The difference between illusion and reality is vague to the one who suffers from the former and questionable for the one suffering form the later.

I enjoyed hearing that. Smilie

You sure it was a train?

You sure it wasn't the Skylanders aisle at Wal-Mart? Smilie

Edit: Oh, and I wanted Shulk but scalpers ruined it. I'd love Lucina and (hopefully) an Inkling, but I'm sure scalpers will ruin that for me, too.

Preorder like I did. I had Rosalina preordered from the moment she got announced! Smilie

I didn't see the pre-order either time. They were gone by the time I learned they were up.

I have all of the Smash range apart from Meta Knight, Dedede and Shulk because Amazon screwed me over on preorders. I also doubt I'll be able to get Ness, because I missed out on the preorders which ran out almost instantly. -.-

Nintendo, please make more. The demand is unreal.

i really want little mac and captain falcon and king D.

I've got Fox , Samus, Kirby and Falcon still boxed but I've got Link and Pikachu Unboxed. I've got Ness preordered as well. I also want Falco but then I'm done....

Keeping an eye out for a shulk restock but the one amiibo I want badly is one of Wonder-Red. I don't even care if there aren't any games that support unique functionality with it, I just want a little model. Smilie

I would have gotten a Sonic Amiibo if I thought it would be used in any decent way outside of Smash Bros which I'm not interested in. Smilie
