Valve Announces Launch of Steam Controller and Steam Link on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Valve has just announced the release date of its Steam Controller and Steam Link. Both devices will be available on 16th October 2015 if consumers pre-order, while stocks last. This is an early bird offer with limited availability ahead of the general release on 10th November 2015. At the moment, Valve is offering pre-orders on its Steam web site while GAME also has a number of bundles on offer from its online store.

The Steam Controller is the long anticipated PC controller from Valve, one of the biggest companies in PC gaming. It has elements of traditional controllers, like triggers and face buttons, but uniquely separates itself from the competition with dual trackpads. It looks like the Steam Controller will close the gap between using controllers like the Wii U Pro Controller, Xbox controller and historic DualShock; and the traditional keyboard and mouse set up. Check out a video of the Steam Controller in action below. Valve is currently selling the Steam Controller for £39.99 plus £7 shipping. The controller is also available from GAME in bundles with Steam Wallet credit.

Complementing any gaming PC, the Steam Link offers a discrete streaming option to gamers who want to access their Steam libraries away from their PCs. Steam Link will take advantage of the power already present in a gaming PC and stream games from it to whichever display hosts the Steam Link. Anyone already familiar with Steam In-Home Streaming will know what to expect from Valve's little black box which looks to make it even easier to access the wonders of PC gaming around their houses. The Steam Link is available on the Steam web site for £39.99 plus £7 shipping. GAME is selling the Steam Link in bundles with the Steam Controller and Steam Wallet credit.

Now all that's left is for Valve to announce Half-Life 3.

I assume the controller's trackpads can function in place of sticks in any current PC game? I'm curious to try it out. Could see it working better/faster for moving a camera or scrolling menus and such. A small and simple change, but progressive from the sounds of it.

Yep, the trackpads can even mimic the precision of a mouse to mitigate the disadvantage of using a controller. I've been looking forward to trying the Steam Controller with Civilization, and other mouse-based games, since it was first shown.

I've added a video (here) to the article that shows the controller in action. It definitely makes the Steam Controller look like the ultimate controller as it adopts the traditional analog stick and combines it with a trackpad to deliver the fidelity of a mouse.

If you haven't guessed, I've already pre-ordered mine! Smilie

Yup, pretty much my take on it.  I have my computer in the same room as my TV (so no need for the Link or Steambox) but rarely play on the TV due to the control issue.  The Steam Controller price point makes it a compelling purchase since it should replace the need for a wireless keyboard and mouse setup.

Happy with my 360 controller for PC gaming.
