Fire Emblem Fates will include an optional same-sex relationship, Nintendo has today confirmed.
The nature of the relationship will depend on the version of the game the player buys. In Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, the player will be able to enter a relationship with and potentially marry one of the male characters if they are playing as a male character, whereas Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright will allow female player characters to marry one of the female characters.
These characters have been confirmed as Zero in Conquest, an ex-thief who loves to watch people suffer, and Shara in Birthright, an extremely prejudiced spellcaster who stalks those she deems compatible with her.
"We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game's scenario and the nature of the game play," said Nintendo in a statement. "In the end of course, the game should be fun to play. We feel that Fire Emblem Fates is indeed enjoyable to play and we hope fans like the game."
The statement also confirms that a third storyline will be available as downloadable content, but the exact nature of this remains unconfirmed.
Fire Emblem Fates releases in two versions in Q1 2016.
