Minecraft Wii U, 3DS Just Hasn't Happened Yet

Minecraft Wii U, 3DS Just Hasn

Mojang COO Vu Bui spoke about a potential version of Minecraft for Nintendo platforms.

Bui was asked about whether being owned by Microsoft would cause limitations for Minecraft to be brought to other platforms. "If I had my way, we'd be on everything," he said. "I've never heard a reason why we haven't ended up on Wii U or 3DS. It just hasn't happened yet."

There have been other attempts at bringing a similar experience to Wii U and 3DS with Cube Life: Island Survival for Wii U, Cube Creator 3D for Nintendo 3DS and U Craft for Wii U.

Do you think a Wii U or 3DS version of the popular sandbox experience would work?

He's saying that like there have never been any obstacle when some key people at Nintendo and Mojang have been in contact with each other to talk about making it happen since way back in 2013?

If there have been desire on both sides and no obstacles, then why hasn't it happened yet?

If I had to guess, I'd say the Wii U install base is too small while the 3DS can't run the game. Makes Nintendo a low-priority target for Mojang, especially considering the market for Minecraft in Japan is almost non-existent.

If Nintendo launches a more capable handheld in the next 2-3 years, it wouldn't surprise me to see Minecraft support at launch.

Surprisingly not true. You only have to look at how the game has fared on PSV, of all systems, and you'll see there is clearly a growing audience for the game over in Japan. It started off a barely anything, but has kept on trucking for a few months now and is over 200,000 units sold now, which isn't pretty decent considering PSV is almost dead there.

200k units isn't a tiny amount, but considering the worldwide total is some 65 million, that means we're talking .003% of Minecraft users. Also, isn't Japan the only place the Vita isn't struggling?

Also, compare that to another primarily western game, GTA V, and things look more grim; it sold over 600k units in its first week in Japan on the PS3 alone, while Minecraft is sitting at about 500k for its lifetime sales across all platforms over there. At best you could round up and say 1/70th of Minecraft users are based in Japan, and that's assuming nobody bought the game more than once.

I don't know, if I was Mojang I would assume that if Sony couldn't boost Minecraft in Japan, Nintendo probably can't either. Then again, Nintendo might have more of the audience Minecraft goes for even if it doesn't have the sheer math behind it.
