Dragon Quest XI for PS4, 3DS with Nintendo NX Considered on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Square Enix lifted the lid on the next numbered edition of Dragon Quest, the multiplatform Dragon Quest XI.

After a brief stint on Nintendo platforms as exclusives, the series is will return to the PlayStation format with a PlayStation 4 released planned for Dragon Quest XI. There will also be a version of the game for Nintendo 3DS, Square Enix announced during an event earlier today in Japan.

The game, unlike the MMO Dragon Quest X, will be designed as a more traditional single player title, with a distinct experience on each platform too, despite sharing story elements.

The game, according to Square Enix's presser, is being "considered" for launch on Nintendo's new NX platform too - a stretch away from confirmation, but at least a potential entry to Nintendo's currently unknown NX catalogue.

Toy Logic, who helped with the development of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS will be working on the 3DS version, with Akira Toriyama once again bringing his distinct character design to the mix. Interestingly, on the 3DS version, there will be 3D visuals on the top screen, with classic sprites on the lower half for a healthy dose of pixel nostalgia.

Well if it's not exclusive it won't shift any NX system. By that time the PS4 will be well established already, and that's the platform on which it will sell best, especially if it's released on PS4 first.

Aye - that's exactly what I'm thinking. Bit of an odd move, though I guess S-E want to try to shift as many units as possible. Would have far preferred an NX exclusive as you say, weird decision. Unless the NX brings something significant that'd enhance the gameplay, or perhaps boast exclusive expansion content or something like that?

The PS4 version looks like it's got a ways to go. Need to see proper final footage before judging it. The dual views is interesting on the 3DS version but I would prefer to only see one view at a time as both would get too distracting.

The NX is obviously going to have some unique set up so depending on what that is may decide which version I get (assuming we even get this game,)

Yeah, indeed. Don't get me wrong though, whatever Nintendo puts out, I'm gonna get it, and if a DraQue comes out on it, count me in anyway, so for me that's still good news, but I have a hard time seeing what the point is to bring it out on NX, which will have no userbase at all, and at the same time to the ONE current gen system in Japan which does at least decently in terms of hardware sales.

Then again, and I say THEN AGAIN... if the NX turns out exactly like I predicted it would and is indeed a hybrid of home console and handheld, with probably some sort of phone functionality or at least Android compatibility, and lets people play the game with graphics close to PS4 level while at home and just pick the system and continue playing on the go this could give the NX version an edge, all the more so since Japanese people play more and more on portable devices than on home systems.
