Amazon Selling Digital Nintendo Games on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Amazon US has started to sell digital titles for those with Nintendo Network accounts.

A wide range of downloads are available, including DLC, full retail games, Virtual Console gems and much more for both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The current crop of games includes the likes of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Paper Mario, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Hyrule Warriors, Super Mario 3D World and much more.

In the UK, retailer Amazon is currently offering a handful of titles in digital format, with redeemable download codes provided after ordering.

Would you like to see other retailers offer up digital downloads for Nintendo systems?

How is it advantageous for other platforms to do so, I don't get it... I mean they have to buy the codes from Nintendo themselves I imagine, and they still have to make a profit out of this, so unless they sold the games more expensive than on the eShop itself, through which you have to go anyway to redeem purchased codes, I don't see how that's interesting for Amazon to do so.

I'm guessing that Nintendo is trying to slowly but surely switch Amazons physical distribution to a digital distribution model. Imagine if Amazon no longer stocked physical copies of Nintendo games in years to come. I can only imagine that Amazon will be making profit on this, the only real losers here would be Nintendo themselves by offering some of the profits up to amazon.

Similarly GAME UK have been selling download codes via their website and retail stores for years, however I've noticed on many occasions that the digital  prices are always more than the physical ones...it always makes me wonder who buys them digitally when it's more expensive to do so

Ah yes indeed, that gives Nintendo a wider online exposure of their eShop content. Then I can understand Nintendo's interest in doing so. People wouldn't know that an eShop only game is available on Nintendo's platform unless they owned the system and checked into the eShop, but that way people get to see what's available on the eShop. That makes more sense to me now indeed Smilie. Especially if further down the line, with the NX, they implement something like they do on Android, where you can log into the Google Play website and choose to download to your Android device directly from your PC, and as soon as your device connects to internet, it downloads and installs on its own, which is something I do find useful.

@Rudy I believe that's the idea Nintendo had in mind when they made boxed-digital versions of Mario vs DK and Nintendo Pocket Football Club - having them on store shelves gives the eShop exposure.

It's new for Wii U, but not new overall.

I wouldn't be too quick to praise amazon for low prices, it could be quite damaging for the games industry if they get a similar position in that as they do books.

Amazon undercuts other locations prices by using their market position to make publishers sale them stuff cheaper. (if your a book publisher, amazon expect you to give them your books 30% or so cheaper else they wont sale it - but you kinda have to go along with it because amazon controls such a large portion of sales you cant really afford to miss).

I dought they have the leverage to demand this from games publishers, but its still worth being cautious. By as direct as you can imho. Nintendo really should let Indies sale direct on their own websites, for example.
