To celebrate National Video Games day, here are ten facts about Nintendo's porky plumber, Mario.
Nintendo have sent across ten intriguing facts about everyone's favourite platforming hero. As one of the most recognised characters of all time, Nintendo will celebrate the day (12th September) with the launch of Super Mario Maker, 24 hours before.
So here are ten things you may, or may not, know about Mario:
1. Mario has made over 200 appearances in video games.
2. The Eighties Baby
The first game in the series, Super Mario Bros, launched 30 years ago on Sept. 13, 1985.
3. Holds a pilot license
In Super Mario Land, Mario has to pilot a submarine and an airplane to save Princess Daisy.
4. The musical genius behind the man
Nintendo composer Koji Kondo is the man behind the iconic soundtrack to Super Mario Bros and many other Mario titles over thirty years.
5. Mario's inner voice is called Charles
The voice of Mario has been provided by American voice actor Charles Martinet since 1995. It runs in the family, as Martinet also voices Mario's twin brother, Luigi, and Wario.
6. Mario's arcade debut
Mario's first appeared in the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game, setting out to save his friend Pauline.
7. Power-up Extraodinaire
Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced a host of now iconic power-ups for Mario to pick up like the Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit and Goomba's Shoe.
8. Mario was originally known as "Jumpman" in Donkey Kong.
9. Revisiting an old friend
Mario actually didn't appear in Donkey Kong 3, but he did make his return to the series in Donkey Kong for Game Boy.
10. Defying the laws of physics
Some games break the space-time continuum by having Mario interact with his younger self, Baby Mario.
