Pokémon Company Sues Fan for Unofficial Party Poster on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

A fan, who has been running unofficial Pokémon themed parties, has been hit with a $4,000 lawsuit.

With PAX proving to be a popular event in Seattle each year, Ramar Larkin Jones has been running different themed parties for the last four years, with prizes, tournaments and a DJ bringing a heap of fun to party goers. This year he had aimed to have it Pokémon themed, with a poster for the event using official artwork.

Jones was approached by lawyers for the The Pokémon Company in August, so naturally shut down the event. However, the company's lawyers are refusing to back down and will only dismiss the case if Jones coughs up a hefty $4,000 by the middle of November.

In a GoFundMe page, he writes "I love the parties, the fandom, cosplay and overall geek spirit that descends on Seattle. This year I tried to throw a Unofficial Pokemon party because why not… it would be fun, I'm a huge fan, I know all my friends are fans and I mostly wanted to geek out and add to the fun parties you can find all over the city."

Do you agree with The Pokémon Company's decision?

I think the problem stems from the fact that it was a 21+ party serving alcohol and charging money for the tickets.

Also, we have laws here where companies are required to defend their trademarks or else they risk setting precedent that can be used against them in the future (same reason Zenimax sued Mojang over "Scrolls" despite everyone at Zenimax being huge fans of Minecraft).

The situation sucks, as it seems the guy really wasn't out to harm anyone, but he made some pretty poor decisions as well.

Seems a bit unfair to me, I mean it's free advertisement for them and makes Pokémon look cool and hype in a demographic that might not have considered diving in again with the latest games, cause i can't imagine the partygoers would have been around the age of 12. There a lot more stuff out there that I find far more infringing than THIS, and after which The Pokémon Company would do well to go after instead of a single individual. How about those Chinese manufacturers of illegal, unlicensed Pokémon crap who make millions of of those instead of a one man, would did not even go through with the idea and to whom those $4000 he might need them to even live?
