Moffitt: Nintendo 3DS is Here to Stay on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Despite mobile games dominating the scene, Nintendo 3DS is still holding its own slice of the market.

Since 2011, Nintendo has sold at least 50.41 million units of the popular handheld console, something that was eclipsed by the Nintendo DS, Game Boy and Wii, but still ranks exceptionally high up the list of most consoles sold worldwide to date.

It's been four years since the handheld hit the market, so has Nintendo 3DS reached its peak? Nintendo's Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales and marketing, believes there's still plenty in store for 3DS, with sales ahead of the 2014 pace in the US: "Nintendo 3DS is here to stay."

Due to the different control schemes with mobile gaming versus a more traditional handheld like 3DS, he believes that "gaming on smart devices and gaming on Nintendo 3DS can happily coexist, to the benefit of all gamers."

Do you think the 3DS has many more years in it?

Didn't they say "There's still plenty in store for the Wii" about six months before they announced the Wii-U, though?

Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?

I'd be surprised if it was here to stay. They have an ok line up of games announced already for next year but it is thinning out. Unless they start making use of the "New 3DS'" capabilities but I doubt they will!

Hmm, maybe another year at the very most. Can't see it lasting that much longer though.

Kind of weird situation at the moment with NX. Usually Nintendo announce/reveal their new handheld before their next home console, but since NX is very likely to be released next year, I wonder what will happen with the next handheld.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I still don't believe they will do the handheld/home console hybrid. I mean, surely it would be way too expensive for the consumer, if they went that route.

I still dont think the mobile market effects things nearly as much as people think.
The 3DS not doing as well as the NDS is imho, clearly down to it not catching as much of the new gamer market. But thats because the NDS was so incredibly successful, not because the 3DS is particularly bad.
People see the decline and think it correlates to mobiles rise. But its more a decline due to the shear mountain made by the last console. Take the NDS out of the equation, and there isn't any clear decline due to the uptake of smartphones.

As for its lifespan - I dont see the need for a replacement.

Do people really think more horsepower is going to boast sales at this point?
I'm skeptical.
Likewise the system already has pretty much every sensor and tech you can squeeze into a system at that size/cost.  GPS is the only thing I think you could add at this point.
To make a new console you really need a good strong justification for it tech wise, and I just dont see one here yet.
