Nintendo has announced that its successor to the Wii U will launch next year.

The company's next home console, code-named NX, has been confimed to launch worldwide in March 2017, but will not be appearing at the E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles in June.

However, more information is set to be announced later this year.

I thought this year was a little too soon.
Then again, 2017 seems too soon as well, but not as too soon :p

Didn't expect it tbh.

Was expecting reveal at E3 and launch in November.

Thinking because they were expecting Wii U to last longer than it did, they haven't been able to get the console ready for this year. Just have to wonder if that's gonna be good timing for Nintendo, launching in March, when they'll miss the holiday period, and possibly end up with ports of big holiday games again, which will inevitably sell worse.

Unless they announce something soon or at E3, they've got a completely dead year this year, so really banking on NX in March.

Was expecting an E3 reveal and then a launch in November, as well. I'm guessing they really wanted to hit the Xmas period (why wouldn't they?), but maybe things didn't go quite as planned. Guess we'll have to wait and see what they have up their sleeves. I'm excited to hear about it all!

I like this for three personal (and possibly superficial) reasons:

1) March is my birthday
2) I still have a bunch of Wii U and 3DS (if NX is mobile too) games to finish
3) This pushes the Wii U (on paper) to having had a 5 year life span
NES: 1986-1991
SNES: 1991-1996
N64: 1996-2001
GCN: 2001-2006
Wii: 2006-2012
WiiU: 2012-2017
NX: 2017-

Then again rushing the NX out the door to get it on shelves for the holidays like the Wii U did also with nothing but ports of older games, and nothing from Nintendo themselves, would be foolish. A later release might be exactly what they need in this case. Better make a big smash impact with a solid launch rather than repeat the mistakes of the Wii U, marketing wise (not talking about design or power here). I trust that with a guy like Kimishima at the helm, a man of numbers and more strategic-sounding than perhaps Iwata was, might help them win this time.

From what I've seen elsewhere, the system is pretty much ready to go, but they're holding off for March so they'll have a stronger launch lineup.

That's for the best in my opinion if that is the case. Launching without games all over again would be suicide. It damaged the 3DS early on as it took the system a year and a price cut to start selling better, and it damaged the Wii U too. Not saying it was the definitive nail in the coffin for the latter but it certainly contributed to things goin the way they did. The Wii U did have software IMHO, but just not the games it needed.

I think the most important thing is to get consumers believing in Nintendo products again. Games are definitely important, but the hardware is so important this time, as well. Unless you're a die hard Nintendo fan, others have lost faith and trust in the company, especially after everything that's happened with Wii U and the constant delays of Zelda and not listening to what fans want.

I'm not saying fans are always right or they should do what fans want all the time, but when it comes to basic quality of life stuff, then yeah they need to get on it and make it better. It's common sense stuff they're getting wrong time and time again.

From a general standpoint, I think Nintendo definitely has a negative image surrounding it for a lot of people. I don't think a lot of people have that much confidence in Nintendo any more. It's sad and I love the company still and the games they're putting out, but even I can see they're going wrong in some of the most basic areas.

I also feel Nintendo does a really poor job of hyping stuff up in recent times. When you look at the Wii, they hyped up that system and put everything into advertising it. The E3 reveal was one of the most spectacular moments I've ever seen. I've mentioned it before, but sometimes I think Nintendo have become a bit too humble.

Anyway, that's my thoughts about it all. Not saying I'm right, but that's the general feelings I get from looking at message boards and social networks etc. Basically the whole package needs to be right this time. The hardware, the controller, the games, the online and whatever else they think up!
