Mario is embarking on a brand new quest around the globe with Super Mario Odyssey announced for Nintendo Switch today.

It's been speculated for some time that Nintendo has been crafting a new 3D platforming solo adventure post Super Mario 3D World. A short snippet made its debut during the initial console announcement back in October last year, enticing fans to ponder just what the new game could entail.

Confirmed this morning during Nintendo's broadcast, Super Mario Odyssey is the first sandbox game since Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, bringing the plumber back to his 3D adventuring roots. Keen to explore the wider world, Mario embarks on a new journey aboard an airship, including what looks like a New York-like city. He won't be alone, though, as that iconic red hat will come alive - offering new abilities to the already versatile jump-man.

Super Mario Odyssey will be available during the upcoming holiday 2017 season on Nintendo Switch.

TAKE MY MONEY NOW, THIS LOOKS AMAZING!

Wow. I was not expecting to see the city, big surprise. Seems like quite a bold move, but I'm sure Nintendo will handle the city better than Sonic Team did with Adventure, which I couldn't help but think of. But this is Nintendo. Smilie

Looks like the right mix, not playing it safe, but also, it looks like it's going to be the pure 3D platforming fix we've been after since Mario 64/Sunshine. Can't wait!

I called it Super Mario Adventure when I saw it!

Not sure I like this just yet but plenty of time to see more.

It looks fantastic, I'm very excited to play a more openworld style Mario game again! The different and unique locations is really strange, but in a good way! It was a really nice surprise.

I think the animations for Mario are superb, really brings him to life more than ever before. I loved the new hat mechanic, too, where you're able to use his hat to jump across lengthy gaps or get up to higher places.
