CAPCOM: GameCube disappoints us

By James Temperton 05.04.2003 1

Confused, very confused...
According to various sources Nikkei Business Daily has stated that gaming giants CAPCOM are to shift focus from GameCube to XBOX and in the most part PS2 following disappointing sales of their titles on the format.

The main region of concern is Japan, where games that would normally perform well only entering the charts towards the mid teens. Resident Evil was a prime example, hardly even denting the charts in the far east. The entire article, if based in any truth, will be a huge blow to Nintendo, who have invested substantial sums into building bonds with some of Japan's finest companies. Also mentioned in the article, and something that will further fuel debate over its authenticity is that it confirmed Resident Evil 4 as not being GameCube exclusive. Now, if you take into consideration the original contract, this is impossible, as CAPCOM are tied to producing GameCube exclusive Resi titles for quite a while yet.

Another strange thing, is that CAPCOM have developed the five exclusice/non-exclusive GameCube titles, four of which are yet to go on sale. So, what exactly is this based on? The sales of two games, does this make sense? Not really now does it. The bonds Nintendo have made will account for the sort of sales problems they are having in Japan at present, but it would be perfectly logical for CAPCOM to wait and see how their other games perform first. before getting cold feet...

CAPCOM However responded to the article by releasing this statement:

As previously announced in September 13, 2001, as of present time there are no plans to port biohazard (GC) and Biohzard 0 (GC) to other systems. Also, Biohazard 4, which is currently in production, will be released for the GameCube as previously planned. There are no changes regarding our fundamental direction.

So, they don't confirm or deny anything. Now, can we remind you not to speculate too much, as April 1st has only just passed, and some people have decided to be a bit late with their jokes, so this could be another one, but it would appear that the newspaper it is taken from is real and the article is also based in some truth.

No doubt this will be cleared up sooner or later....
