Nintendo Special - A Wii Bit of Analysis
Article by Adam Riley :: Thursday, 27th April, 2006

Nintendo has always had various different project names to describe its forthcoming systems. But have any of them really mattered? Have any of them honestly resulted in the platform being impacted upon negatively in a particular way? All signs would likely point to 'no', and yet people are straight away condemning the new home console because of its name alone. Why is this, and is it justified? Cubed3 discusses...

So here we have it, the announcement we have all been eagerly awaiting. Nintendo has constantly gone on record to say that the name Revolution was merely a codename so that Industry moguls and developers alike could refer to it as 'something' rather than 'Nintendo's next console', or even fan-created names such as the NES5 or NE5. Then once people finally realised that Nintendo was not playing around, like is seemed to have done with the Nintendo DS (DualScreen, Developer's System...), names such as 'Revo' and even 'Nintendo RS' began to crop up. But what exactly is in a name? Have other systems not gone under different work-in-progress titles before?

For instance, the Game Boy Advance was previously known within Industry circles as Project Atlantis; the Nintendo 64 went from 'Project Reality' to 'Ultra 64' before undertaking a final, last minute change; even the GameCube was deemed something completely different, going under 'Project Dolphin' (because of its Flipper device inside, and hinted at in Rare's Banjo Tooie, with a Dolphin on the inside wall of one of the houses); and then there is the Nintendo DS, which was first known as 'Nitro', then 'Nintendo DS' and eventually just kept its final development moniker.

The Nintendo Wii then...Many have already jumped at the fact that 'Wii' is Japanese for 'good', which would definitely work well over in that region, filling gamers (and those ever trusty non-gamers) with much more confidence than Big Black Brick 360 or System of the Break Down 3. Yet on the other hand, that really large, swelled-up hand, is the fact that the way we are supposed to pronounce 'Wii' is 'wee'. Now this would cause, and seems to have already done so, mayhem due to the torrent of puerile toilet jokes. Surely Nintendo's marketing bods must have realised the repercussions to taking this tangent instead of sticking on firmer ground?

They may very well have indeed. They could well have simply weighed up the negatives with the huge potential impact in terms of marketing spin that the name brings. Nintendo has regularly talked about how it is not an 'OR' company, it is an 'AND' one, encompassing all age, nationality and sex groups instead of merely pointing toward one particular large sector of the already founded gaming community and alienating the rest of the world. Many facts and figures are banded around and they all point to the same things: gaming is static in some countries, whilst on the decline in others; and even in the UK there is around 75% of the population that is completely untapped in terms of gaming. Okay, factor in the nursery ages and that open percentage falls slightly, but even the old folk are being drawn in with hand-writing recognition and brain exercising software on the DS. And if Nintendo does live up to its 'kiddie' image, it is without doubt that it could formulate some pre-school software for the DS or Wii in the future. 'Educate your children with Nintendo'; 'Live the Peter Pan dream with Nintendo'. It is more likely to happen with the sleeping giant that is Nintendo than the bold and brash Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is all about families and always has been, after all...

Anyway, Nintendo Wii, good or bad? 'Wii can play together', 'Wii are all the same in Nintendo's world', Wii will make all your dreams come true'. The potential, can you see it? Weighing up those positives and negatives again comes into play. The name WILL stick in your mind, even if for the wrong reasons, and it WILL have great scope for puns across all markets (France, Japan and English speaking countries in particular, off the top of my head).

Theory time, though. What if Nintendo is stringing us all along? What if Nintendo is proving a point that people are too bothered about an image and or a name? Then it would indeed be making a very strong, valid point. People are too bothered about how a name sounds (despite people accepting the bland XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3), what a system looks like and how many polygons can be shifted even before running a game on the hardware. But what would really be the need for such deviousness and deception? Nintendo would have to have something immensely special waiting in the wings if it did not want to incur the wrath of the gaming world!

Finally, look at what is confirmed by the strange, cryptic message included in today's announcement:

  • Putting people 'in touch' with games (hands-on interaction)
  • Putting people 'in touch' with each other (Wi-Fi Connection gaming)
  • Breaking down barriers around the gaming world (more non-games)
  • The 'ii' represents the controllers (two controllers bundled at launch?)
  • Let us know your thoughts on the name, the speculation and more by giving us your feedback at the bottom of this article. Just remember this:

The world is no longer just about you or I, it is about 'Wii'...

    Awful, simply awful.

    Expect the following to be paraphrased;

A -"Hey, have you played the Wii yet?"
    B -"The wha...?"
A -"New Nintendo console, the Wii.."
B -"Why does it have a **** name?"
A -"I dunno, something to do with community and breaking barriers"
    B - "That's pretty gay.."
A -"Yeah, I guess, but the games are awesome"

When ever I see Wii... I think of World War II...

I feel that "Wii" should have been the codename and "Revolution" should have been the product's actual name. I think the naming consultants Nintendo hired should be shot.

Though it's just a name. If roses were called "poopoopeepeefuck" I doubt people would like them less... perhaps more... hmm... I've got a name to trademark, excuse me.

Who are we? We are the Knights who say..... "Wii"!

Look at me, I can Wii!

Hey will C3 change its name to Wiid4 or something?

Seriously, They admit they screwed up with the GC's design, I hope they realise they've screwed up with the "Wii" and change it before its too late...

I'm goin to pronounce it as "Wee-eye"...sounds better like that, if Nintendo hadn't specifically mentioned its pronunciation as being "Wee" (idiots!), every1 would have called it "Wee-eye" or something similar...Wii doesn't look like it wud be pronounced "Wee" really...

    *sigh*

I dunno if I shud go for a Wii or not...but if you gotta go, you gotta go...

C3 won't be changing its name to anything. I think we lost the Gamecube imagery a while ago with the almost-death of the system, really.

if Nintendo hadn't specifically mentioned its pronunciation as being "Wee" (idiots!),

Actually it's "we" as in 'we think 'Revolution' was a cool name, but it alienated the mass (casual / non-Hardcore) market, Wii should bring together gamers and the mainstream consumers"

Yeah, still debatable, but it has to be mentioned...

IGN Wii: Some fans have already started petitions in hopes of somehow convincing Nintendo to change the name. Any message for these people?

Perrin Kaplan: Live with it, sleep with it, eat with it, move along with it and hopefully they'll arrive at the same place.

The more I think about it, the more I like it.

    Wii - Fi
    Wiireless
    Wiimote
    We
    ii as players
    i as remote and ball
The many uses of the word and its ease of use across all languages.
So many potential strengths, so many potential uses:

    Wii Love Games
Wii are Free (ref to wiimote)
    etc

The punnery is a weakness, but maybe thats actually a strength. It gets people talking, and if they can get past it it could hold as a landmark name, a revolution if you will.

Lest we not forget that companies lay claim to EVERY possible name they can think of. One of the reasons MS went for 360 is almost certainly the lack of un-taken names. I bet there was very little good stuff left, and no, Revolution would not work.

    See no Wiivil
    Hear no Wiivil
    Speak no Wiivil

Guess we just have to get on with it, as a logo i think it looks nice, I just don't like saying the word "The Wii".

I'm going to take action: I'm going to bitch and moan all over the Internet! The power is yours!

But excuse me, I have to go take a wicked wii.

Who are we? We are the Knights who say..... "Wii"!

    You could almost say, RTB:

    The punnery is a Wiikness!

    Wiikid.

I actually like the name, its got a quirkyness and "fuck you Sony" originality that says everything I like about Nintendo.

    See no Wiivil
    Hear no Wiivil
    Speak no Wiivil

The system is defensible, but the name is not, and no, we will not get used to it.

    It just hurts!

    Just call it Nintendo W

It's spelt Wii but pronounced Revolution

Vote 1, Eternal Darkness 2 for Wii

I'm still going to call it the Nintendo Revolution......! Wii indeed. What a bunch of idiots. As if Nintendo fans don't have a hard enough time as it is. They want to embarrass us further by romoving such a cool name as "Revolution" and assigning a new one that's closely realated to what Wii all do in the toilet. Sissies!

I think that by taking this original and revolutionary path, Nintendo Wii's all over Sony and Microsoft! Smilie

What they did is just a common mistake, they thought so much of a new name, tried to give it so much meaning, that they ended up with a bad pun without realizing it.

People are going to laugh at it and it will definitely not attract the casual gamer, in English-speaking countries at least, because appearence is ALWAYS what matters the most to the general public.

Good luck Nintendo, you sure will need it !

Honda once named a car Honda fitta, which means pussy in the nordic contries:

"Car maker Honda introduced their new car "Fitta" in the Nordic countries during 2001, only to find out that "fitta" is an old word, currently used in vulgar language to refer to a woman's genitals in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. It was renamed to "Honda Jazz" for the Nordic market.

According to newspaper articles, Japanese ads said that "[Fitta] is small on the outside, but large on the inside". It's now called the Honda Fit in Japanese markets. "

Personally, "Wii" almost looks more like a symbol than a word, much like the the omega symbol or pie (i.e. 3.14). It really is hard to grasp as a word but being used as a logo certainly works as shown on the video. I'm okay with it regardless though.

Incidentally enough with the pee jokes. Gee how original, no wonder Nintendo has to explain why Wii was chosen, it's because of the childish nature some. There're so many ways to view this:

    Wii for Us.
    Wii for Small.
Wii for Fun, and fun for all.

Im just gonna call it revolution still. Wii just doesnt sound rite.

Maybe when mario dives of a cliff now he will say "Wiiiii!"?
