Its only a stupid name really for the UK remember.
While the US are aware we use We as "wee wee" it isnt nearly used so much.(they prefer "Pee")
Some words just have different emphasis's worldwide.
A good example is "Jurk".
In japan the name is popular/good.
In america its merely weird.
Its only the UK thats really hit the "WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING" spot.
"The difference is, Nintendo is not listening, and failed to listen in test groups when it was easy to change"
Where did you get this information from?
I think its likely they did test groups, just not in regions that really have the connection between the word.
Their main concern seems to have been internal prouncation...they might not have looked at regional meaning at all.
("we" be one of the easiest sounds to make)
They were going to call it the iNintendo, but apparently some company already has a similarly named product?
The next best avaliable pronoun was we, but it didn't have quite the same visual effect as Wii does.
He should have said, "Yeah we might change it... but we won't."
Just give me a PR guy with a sense of humor.
I can confirm however that we are committed to a 2006 launch.
Not specific as such, but more confirmation of a Euro 2006 release is always welcome. Rob's a main guy at Nintendo UK, by the way, not just 'some PR guy'
Just so you know...
Overnight, Nintendo has turned into just another giant PR-bullshit-spewing corporation. We've been asking for 'actual marketing of Nintendo stuff' for years now, but I never anticipated such a low thing from such a seemingly unique company.
This is lifestyle advertising, the single most repellent thing on earth besides the thought of John Prescott succesfully mating with two female human beings.

Excellent interview???? EVERthing apart from the name WEE issue was good i had alredy predicted what the nintendo guy was gonna say about tha name. hes just a puppet foced to say what he is told not opinions, i know he hates the name, i know i hate, i know every here FING HATES it. That interview was good but pointless. if i were the intervier i wud have asked the most informal questions i wud literally shouted to Rob What tha hell are u thinking?!
No. Shut up. Not everyone here hates it like you oh so want us too. I, for one, love the name. Grow up.
At E3 we will unveil the exciting and completely new interactive entertainment experiences Wii will create and let people have hands-on experiences for the first time ever. Because it's so different, it's difficult to explain in words. However, once you pick up and play with the controller, you will believe in it. The success of Nintendo DS is a good guide. By introducing the touch screen it changed how people interact with their hand-held games, and Wii will do the same with home console games. DS brought new kinds of players, including women and seniors, to video games, and Wii will become an entertainment device that everyone wants to try.
Great words said there, Rob. I surely will look forward to testing out the system itself when they start issuing test-pods around the country.
There are likely many other questions I could, and maybe should, have asked.
But tell me this, in my situation what would you do:
- Sat at work, with a filter system that doesn't allow access to C3.
- Take a risk emailing Rob to see if he responds.
- 5 minutes later he replies 'No problem, get the Qs to me now and I'll sort you out'.
- Time to panic. No contact with C3 staff, other than blind emails in the hope someone's online.
- Meanwhile, start frantically thinking up ANYTHING to ask Rob, whilst also pretending to be working so my boss doesn't castrate me.
- Finally get a few Qs from Mike to help out and then send them off quickly...
I was under pressure, thought it turned out alright considering that situation!!
And I came away with my testicles still attached to my body...advantage!
Time to go Wii...
Time to go Wii...
OMG! Raz you are so immature cuzz
with all this talk about the wii being so different that the name just had to be different im getting quite excited about the TV ads for it as they ought to be very different.
Ah, can't help a bit of immaturity at times...heck, I'm only 24
And the ad schemes promise to be superb.
what a shit interview (not Cubed3's fault). he just repeated himself and the current PR statements like a robot

My problem with the interview is that Nintendo ae actuaolly ruinign the chance to grab non-gamers. I really can't see my dad going to buy a console called "wii", or anyone who doesnt play games thta i know. How many of them go to forums to learn the "true" meaning of wii? Nintendo have fucked up so badly.

Welcome to interviewing people from the industry. Few open up.

Wait until we see how NInty will market it before branding wii a failure.

Have you actually watched any of the 360 adverts, how about the PSP ads?
Nintendo are actually trying to do new things with it all, be creative and expand the market, which is much more than can be said in the latter cases.
As the UK hates Nintendo, then this is one of their "new audiences" that they need to grab. Calling the games console "Wii" certaintly won't help unless they resort to well thought out self ridicule, much like the newer SKODA adverts the UK has seen.
Most people seem agree that the new SKODAS are very classy depsite "cheapo" company image.
If Nintendo can deliberatly make their advertising campaign take the piss (wii) out of themselves, they may be onto a winner.
But still, that the fuck were they thinking calling it 'Wii' fools.

Yes, how irrelevent.
Why?
Both the 360 and PSP adverts are so lifestyle orientated it's not funny, that's all I was saying. If you have such a problem with it then you have a problem with the entire industry...
Did their PR dept. offer you a job Tendos?
Nope, I can just think outside my own little box
The name pretty much sucks. I guess we will have to live with it though. I do remember thinking the same thing when i heard the name for the 360 but now it doesn't seem so bad. So maybe the same thing will happen to the *CoughwiiCough*.

it's irrelevant because i'm disappointed that Nintendo have sunk so low. I never said the other two hadn't. Some of MSs stuff is dispicable. The WORST THING IN THE WORLD EVER is called the 'hip-hop gaming league, google it. Nintendo is making steps in the diection of THE HIP HOP GAMING LEAGUE.
I love the name for three reasons.
One - because I can see the many ways in which the name 'Wii' can be used.
Two - because it is pissing off many current gamers and just goes to show their faith of things being different. Not many like change unfortunately.
Three - because it is just plain unique, simple, and far better than a generic name for a next-generation console i.e. Revolution
4 reasons why I hate the name:
one - It's different for the sake of being different rather than being a better way to do something
two - It sounds shit and is spelt using the incorrect letters
three - It's a self-admitted a 'lifestyle brand' - the lowest form of marketing
four - It will deter more people than it will attract due to its shitness. I like to hope that not everyone is a weak minded, consumerist, brand-slogans-used-in-everyday-speak cunt
4 is more than 3 so I win

He even used the same answer twice during the interview...a little disappointing his opinion wasn't really shared, but at least it clarifies a few points...and it's was good of him to turn around so quickly. Some people we've interviewed take AGES to respond!
He might be right it might actually grow on us and change all negqative connotations surrounding the pronouciation. But in the meantime i still think it's gonna be embarrassing not to mention traumatising for adults and children alike going into shops and asking for the Wii. It's a bold step but let's just hope it isn't a foolish one.
Apart from Super Famicon and Super Nes or SNES, Nintendo has always hd better code names that official ones, which they seem to quit literally, fuck up!
