The Wii Interview with Nintendo UK's Rob Saunders
Conducted by Adam Riley & Mike Mason :: Friday, 28th April, 2006

The Nintendo Revolution is no more. We all know that by now after last night's massive announcement and media blitz. The whole world is now aware that Nintendo's new home console is set to be called the 'Wii', pronounced 'we'. But this drastic change has brought up many questions, ones that were burning so hot Cubed3 just had to get the answers. Thankfully Nintendo UK's Rob Saunders was on hand to provide us with what we required...

Cubed3: First of all, just to confirm to our readers

I sincerely hope they are taking the piss with this choice! Surely they know that a similarly sounding word in the UK is not one they want associated with their console!

Complete Nintendo fanboy that I am, I am completely surprised at this choice!!!! What the heck was wrong with using 'Revolution'!

Small amount of thinking later, maybe they are simply taking the Wii out of Sony and Microsoft? Certainly a disruptive way of doing it!

Marzy: Perhaps, Nintendo told us the name and are seeing what people say about it... and as most people hate it or dislike it, maybe they'll change it at E3.

Let's recount the Revolution disappointments we've dealt with in the past year. Firstly, we learned it isn't to be as powerful as the PS3 or 360. Okay, fine, it's not about horsepower, it's about playability--it'll be powerful enough. Next, we learned there will be no HD support. Okay, fine, HD penetration will be higher by the time the Revolution's successor comes out. Then they take away the cool name everyone has grown accustomed to and replaced it with one that sounds like it should have been the actual codename. That, let's face it, more people dislike than not. I'm an American and everyone I've told about the name has given me a weird look or laughed about it. This isn't a UK-only issue. The only market that will like the name the most is the Japanese one. Remember, this isn't the first time a brand name has been cool in one region and been totally bad or lewd in another.
Who are we? We are the Knights who say..... "Wii"!

The thing is...it looks good on paper, but when you say it out loud it sounds horrible. I would've prefered maybe Wii to be pronounced as Y

I hope so. If it is, I think it's brilliant genius. If it isn't, I think a few screws are loose.

Yeah, no such thing as bad publicity. As long as people talk about it, ninty's marketers are doing their jobs.

None of you can say, "Yes, this name is fake." The entire population of official Nintendo websites have the name 'Wii'. Check out Nintendo Of Japan's website for an example.

If Nintendo change the name at the last moment then that is a choice they will make, however as it stands now and for the existence of this console, the name is Nintendo Wii. Stop speculating and going on about how this name is fake and so forth when it is clear that it isn't fake.

One thing that some of you need to do is unscrew your British-cultured heads and think of the picture as a whole. The name 'Wii' signifies not 'you' or 'I' as mostly coupled with videogames of today but 'we' as a generation of gamers as a whole. The name makes perfect sense and all that most of you are doing is disapproving it because of your association with urine.

Personally, if Nintendo change the name from Nintendo Wii either back to their codename for the project or something completely new, then they are not the Nintendo I have grown to appreciate and acknowledge.

All I can say in defence of the name is that if you're going to marry urine with Wii then you should marry urine with the word

If we are thinking of wee when we see/say the name, then what are the general population going to do Smilie

    That's the point.

Any decent piece of visual communication wouldn't have "wrong" meanings in other countries. These things should be checked out.

No one in the UK cares what it means in Japan. Solution is simple: change the name for the UK, or have a different global name. "Wii" isn't the only word that can easily be put in sentences or have a funky animation.

I must say the name is a odd choice.

I have been in several gaming stores and they are finding it hard to grasp the name. Having very difficult times of trying to sell/explain this item to the customer.

Hopefully it is something that adapts.

Other things. It won't hurt your wrist! I played Samba De Amigo for weeks on end without giving myself halfwriteass (Sp)

And I am thinking at E3 Nintendo are going to annouce that the Wii will come with two controllers. Seems senisble!

I don't mind the name I'm sure it will grow, and become accepted.

Just the following scenarios crop to mind.

Child walks into a department store, not a game shop, and says to an assistant in the clothing section, I want a wee(Wii),

Assistant replies, go down to the first floor, turn left out of the lifts and you should see the signs.

nbSmiliehe is referring to the toilet.

    -------

Kid phones up a department store helpline and says i'm having problems with my wii (wee),

response from call centre staff: I think you should be phoning the doctor.

    ------
I think its named after the noise Mario makes when he goes down a hole or slide, Weeeee
