Nintendo Media | Fresh Shots of Zelda Phantom Hourglass

By Adam Riley 01.05.2006 12

When the new Zelda was revealed to the world in March, gamers were stunned by how it did not appear to be like a version of the Zelda Four Swords adventure that had been previously promised. In fact, it turned out to be a full-blown Zelda game complete with cel-shaded graphics that on the Nintendo DS's small screen looked almost as good as those in Wind Waker on the GameCube.

The action RPG, which looks reminiscent of Link to the Past on the SNES in terms of gameplay style and appears to wholly use the stylus for control in the same way found in Animal Crossing: Wild World, only has a hazy 'late 2006' release date. However, we now have, courtesy of The Magicbox, some fresh scans (if somewhat grainy ones) of one of Nintendo's premier titles of 2006.

Enjoy these for now and stick with Cubed3 for more details when available...

From what I'm reading there is definitely a mixed response to this particular game. But it's mainly focused on the graphical side, which is a real shame as it just goes to show how shallow most gamers really are.

Yes, it has the childish cel-shaded animation...but Miyamoto always said that Link should be able to show his character more. Zelda was never meant to be a serious adult RPG series, more a light-hearted adventure that had great depth to it.

I'm worried that this could be one of the best Zelda games ever, but people will tarnish it with the 'Wind Waker' brush of negativity purely because of the visuals.

In my eyes, along with FFIII, Tales of the Tempest and even what we've seen of Mistwalker's ASH so far, Phantom Hourglass really shows how powerful the DS can REALLY be!

A mature Zelda would NEVER suit the DS.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

To me nintendo has done the right thing. They made really bright and easy to see visuals. And beside's it look's like the sequel of LoZ:WW so shouldn't it keep the same graphics of its predecessor?

Oh and I like the new artwork, Link is so cute! Smilie

You found the word nipple! And you love touching them!

See, the headline says "fresh", while indeed they are fresh shots, they are not new images, heh. It's all from the video in any case.

Still, I am more than happy with these graphics for a portable system. Mature Zelda would involve a lot of concentration I imagine, for the look to suit the game. On a handheld a more lighthearted title is much better suited in my opinion.

I think the graphics & the style rule, In a lot of ways I'm happy to see WindWaker's Link appear again in full 3D, on the DS too! It's amazing really.

I also hope that like GC, the DS will get a more mature Zelda title too, Nintendo need to help their image...

& who has been saying that this looks crap because of the kiddy graphics?! C'mon, it's like, 5 years later, we don't need WindWaker all over again! Grow up!! Besides, anyone who played the WindWaker grew to love the style, noone else knows what they're talking about.

Seriously, I think that more people would be pleased to see the style get another go! I mean I am! Smilie

Timotei, that's why I subtly avoide the word 'new' Smilie We didn't have the shots on the site, others had them from a recent Japanese magazine (along with Mario Bros screens...think it was Famitsu) and therefore I thought I should share them with those that might have missed them Smilie

Heh. Nice vocabulary-wrangling.

Smilie You have to sometimes...don't want to be deemed a 'liar' Smilie

At the moment, which may seem strange to some, I'm looking forward to Phantom Hourglass more than Twilight Princess. If Flagship is involved in any way as well, then this will probably lift this higher in the expectations stakes than FFIII's remake!

Actually ALTTP was a pretty dark game...

Gods in His Heaven. Alls right in the World.

Yeah, but whilst the storyline may be dark, the imagery doesn't have to be in order for it to be a great game, no? Smilie

I'm looking forward to Phantom Hourglass more than Twilight Princess.

Same here! I prefered Windwaker more than Oot anyway. Its got to be the smooth gameplay and relaxing graphics. Oh and ganondorf was sexy on WW. Smilie

And im a lazy person, I like games that can be played instantly without using too much energy. Smilie
