E3 2006 News | Rayman Raving Rabbids Confirmed For Wii

By Mike Mason 03.05.2006 30

Previously, a trademark was discovered for the next iteration of the Rayman series, and today Ubisoft have come out and announced that the fourth instalment will be called Rayman Raving Rabbids. The game will be coming to current generation and next generation consoles, including Wii, and will debut around Christmas this year.

Rayman Raving Rabbids is being developed by Ubisoft's Montpellier, France studio, headed by Rayman creator Michel Ancel. It promises to be the "funniest and zaniest adventure ever" for the limbless one and follows the story of Rayman as he combats an invasion of out-of-control bunnies, using all new moves and the help of magical creatures.

"It's a real pleasure for me to be back working on an all-new Rayman," said Michel Ancel. "After wrapping up Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, the team here in Montpellier sat down to talk about having some fun with Rayman and his universe. We are running into a bit of a problem, though, because our game has been invaded by thousands of raving mad and vicious bunnies, who have apparently been preparing this assault since the very first Rayman game. We are now sending an SOS to all motivated gamers to help us get rid of them as fast as possible!"

There won't be just one type of rabbit to fight though, and Rayman must come up with methods to best them all. He must also learn to tame, control and ride creatures such as sharks, eagles, rhinos, spiders and angelfish, and can take on their abilities to help fight the enemies. In addition to this, Rayman can also change his appearance to foil the plots of the bunnies, including changing into punk, rock or hip-hop styled clothing.

Ubisoft released a screenshot to accompany the press release, which shows how the Wii controller will be used. It was emphasised with a caption reading "control your spider and other creatures by rotating the controller". Click the thumbnail below to see the full image:

Yeah my point exactly, Blade - thats why my first post Smilie Spiders and bunnies seem more believable than hair like that!

But other than that, the screenshot looks cool, if just for the graphical quality - note the neat lighting effects Smilie

What a very odd piece of media to release, still Rayman is good news in my books, it will be interesting to see how this shapes up. I'm in agreement over the hair...very strange/French Smilie

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

OMG!!! free readical and ubisoft join FORCES! Match made in heaven in my opinion. Two extreeeemely talented studios work together.....please be on Wii!

Dude yuor totally awesome. And i won't be killing you anytime soon.

According to other sites, this is for Wii, and given the screenshot at revo-europe.com the graphics appear a significant step up from the GameCube.

    I want timesplitters 4! Smilie

    Hmmm....interesting. TS4 would rock.

Working like a fiend isn't very fun... and surprisingly isn't very fiendish either.

    Timesplitters was a trilogy.

    It's playtime...

To be honest, I'm not so excited over the graphics from this image, but I quess they will get better over time. I am excited over a new Rayman game though Smilie

Yeah, hopefuly they can improve on the Dreamcast-standard graphics in that screenshot.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I played Rayman Hoodlum Havoc recently and found it enjoyable. I'd like to see Rayman return!

I also wouldn't mind a new TimeSplitters, one that's a step up from the last. Future Perfect was fine but way too similar to 2.

I've never been a fan of Rayman, but this has me intrigued. And that guys hair...WOW!

You know... the more I look at it, the more it reminds me of Gremlins... Or at least the rabbits do... LoL Smilie

Glad to see Ancel's back on board, meaning Rayman should be a blast no matter how strange it looks. Let's hope more in the direction of Rayman 2, rather than the sub-standard third outing.

And doesn't EA have any hold over the Timesplitters licence now that it struck up a publishing deal with Free Radical?

    Hmm...

This is 'Wii Exclusive' according to some sources, but I reckon if true it'll be a 'timed' exclusive.

I still say the spider and bunnies are real, and that crazy hair person is a screenshot from the game...

You're just doing some wishful thinking about the graphical capabilities of the Wii Smilie
