Industry analysis with added bite.

I can promise you one thing about E3 this year; the West Hall will be busier than ever before, with Nintendo and Sony going head to head with their two latest and potentially greatest consoles. More so than ever there is a stark difference between the directions of the two companies with E3 set to be the show where everything gets shown for the first time. Whilst Sony is favouring power and the idea of creating a modern media-hub, Nintendo have gone for a console that they hope will change the way we play games forever. Oh, and for some reason they called it Wii...

E3 is always a bit of a pain in the arse if I'm honest. All the biggest games companies in the world (and quite a lot of the smaller ones) all jump onto various planes for LA and set up massive, large, medium size and teeny-weeny stalls in the gigantic LA Convention Centre. Carnage ensues as a lot of very socially inept, ill-mannered, over-worked, under-paid journalist types swamp the floors in an attempt to see just about everything on display. After a couple of days the show packs up, everyone gets on a plane home and the industry breaths a sigh of relief and starts planning for the next year.

The biggest issue this year is the competition for headlines between Sony and Nintendo. The PS3 and the Wii are two very different consoles, one is going for all out functionality, it is powerful, it is impressive, it is the very definition of the modern home media centre. Nintendo's Wii is, first up, called Wii, second controlled by an innovative motion sensing remote control and thirdly nothing like anything we have seen before; ever. Some people argue that you are now getting 'two gaming industries'; these people are idiots who should be banished to Chav ridden streets of Gillingham forevermore.

Are you suggesting that because films like Ocean's Twelve (one of the worst films of all time packed full of big stars and unbelievably bad dialogue/hideous scripting/rubbish) and Brokeback Mountain (a critically acclaimed creative masterpiece featuring homosexual cowboy fun) both exist in the movie world that there are suddenly 'two movie industries'; obviously the answer is no. Nintendo and Sony will still be competing for the same shelf space, the same consumers and the same column space in their attempts to gain industry superiority. To my mind they are both still competing out of the same shoebox of an industry, for the same core customers, then they both branch out to look to appeal to different types of people in various distinctive demographics.

Sony are after the man of the house (or the twenty something guy living on his own) who wants to own a really cool piece of shiny silver technology that plays great games, offers movies and music, Internet out the box and all sorts of other clever tricks. Nintendo are aiming for kids who like dance mats, old people who like Scrabble and everyone else in between who can't work out how to use a game controller.

The ideological battle between the two companies is fascinating. Nintendo ferverously believe that the industry is diving head first into a dead-end, where increased graphical power and lack of innovation will lead to stagnation, Sony believe that by creating a hybrid machine that is the hub of your home entertainment needs, they will be able to sell a PS3 as an 'essential lifestyle purchase'. The Wii is more about fun. Much like the DS and the PSP, the polarisation of the two consoles couldn't be starker. The Nintendo DS has proven to be a massive success, backed up by a string of critically acclaimed titles that have also gone on to sell in record breaking numbers, Nintendo's machine is rewriting the book on what a successful contemporary games console should be. The Wii is made in a similar mould, but with one key difference: it is a home console.

On the move the DS is a revelation, it offers a lot of quick, innovative, fun, pick-up-and-play titles that you can enjoy for twenty minutes and then pack away. The home console and handheld gaming experiences have always been hugely different. Arguably, when at home people are more willing to be engaged in a title, they want better graphics, bigger sound, greater spectacle and generally a more awe-inspiring experience. Arguably, the PS3 offers this and the Wii doesn't. Arguably, but fatally wrong.

E3 is a show all about spectacle, and nothing says 'Look at me!' like a huge screen showing a game with eye-bleedingly good graphics. But what about something new, something exciting and something that looks like my Sony DVD Remote painted with white gloss paint? The Nintendo Wii is just the sort of thing that will win E3 for Nintendo, not because of big graphics and big spectacle, but because of sheer innovation and freshness of ideas.

So, at E3 this year power will come up against innovation. When Sony and Nintendo speak, the industry sits up and listens, but more than ever they are singing a totally different tune. The floors of E3 house some of the harshest critics in the gaming world, but the acid test will come when the PS3 and the Wii go head to head on the consumer market. E3 will see Nintendo and Sony having to sell their products to journalists and industry suits, but that's the easy party. For Sony, and even more so Nintendo, selling their new hardware innovations to the world outside E3 will prove to be the biggest challenge they have ever faced. The stakes couldn't be higher.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I'm glad it's on tuesday, that's the one day I'm off from school very early. I really hope Nintendo has a good E3 this year. A lot of things already make it seem like it will, but you never know...

James, that is without a doubt the best article you've written. Really hit the nail on the head there. Star up.

Sony has a conference tomorow, they've been eerily quiet, they may have some suprises in store for us.

Yeah, prolly the revamped Sony boomerang, now with all the functions the Wiimote has...

Not being funny, but didn't Nintendo OFFICIALLY say that they weren't competing head on with Sony, and that they were going down a different route? I seem to remember they also said that "they would be happy if the Rev (Wii) was a person's second home console". I may be COMPLETELY misguided, but hey, I was just wondering...

Yeah that sounds about right, Iwata also said that Revolution would be a failure if it didn't sell more than the GC.

Nintendo would be happy to carry on making home consoles even if they stayed third place, thier business model is excellent and makes Nintendo a lot of money, Microsoft lost countless billions on the XBOX for it to come second place, whereas Nintendo made profit, who won that console war then?

Or maybe they just have nothing to say... I can't imagine what they could say, since they're just revealing a PS2 with shiny new shoes

lol megadanxzero. shoes!

That was a fantastic article you wrote. Probably the best Hound yet. I couldn't agree any more it's going to be Power vs Innovation.
Sony has a lot to live upto. They have a lot to lose. In a bid to outdo Microsoft last year, they came out guns blazing with tech demos which really made me and many others go "WoW" this is the future of next gen. They may have won that round of E3 but when the hype died down, as Nintendo slyly hinted in Miyamoto's interview, and what many of us thought, they played their their hand too quickly. Nintendo on the other hand was very coy about the Revolution and it's features giving very little way at last year's E3 and and reavling the Freestyle controller at the Tokyo Game Show. To be honest Nintendo have been more realistic than Sony. They have been waiting for this very Tuesday to blow us away and i have a strong feeling that they're gonna take the show. Why, because Sony has to show us in game Graphics of all those tech demos. Their RSX graphics card is ready and if in game graphics fail to visually surpass the "next wave" of Microsoft games or those tech demos of Killzone and Grand Tourismo that we saw last year. All that tech talk will amount to a steamy pile of crap.Just because Sony has seemingly dominated the Homeconsloe space for 2 generations doesn't mean that they will a third time. The XBox 360 is awesome and is looking to outsell it's Predocessor. Nintendo is looking to attract new types of people and create new genres with Wii. And remember peeps, Sony dominated the portable audio market for eons then Ipod came out of nowhere and snatched it from them. Despite being inferior in terms of power DS is seriously giving the PSP a thrashing in the handheld space. Let's not forget DS Lite has not been released in all regions and the GBA 2 is outthere, somewhere. This is going to be the biggest E3 yet. Tuesday couldn't come soon enough

PS3 conference in a nutshell - the boomerang also has a motion sensor. Thats all you need to know folks, don't bother reading about it tomorrow, thats all theres gonna be. Mark my words - Sony WILL rip-off Nintendo's ideas, if only so people can tell the difference between it and the X360.

The PS3 development process has been a mess really, they're just loading every single feature they can think of into a box and hoping it'll sell...they don't seem to know where they're heading, they're just making it as powerful as they can...they're bunch of headless chickens really...I bet sony's engineers are at it right now, quickly gluing together the controller using parts of the old PS2 controllers and the motion sensors from Wario Ware Twisted...Smilie

Have nothing against them really, I'm a gamer first and foremost, my loyalty is to whoever makes the best games and machines...i hope sony do prove me wrong...but this is just the impression I'm getting from them, thats all...Smilie

Or maybe they just have nothing to say... I can't imagine what they could say, since they're just revealing a PS2 with shiny new shoes

But it's like super fast and has Blu-ray, which means it's gonna be some hugely expensive new shoes!

PS3 conference in a nutshell - the boomerang also has a motion sensor.

I highly doubt it. If anything Sony will reveal a controller that looks less like a banana and more like a controller, but sticking a motion sensor on is a stupid move in my opinion.

There is absolutely no way that Nintendo will come in 3rd place this generation. Ds compatibility, all the stuff the Wii has to offer to lose to some piece of junk 360? No way. PS3 will do all the 360 can do and will have the same, if not more 3rd party support so IMO the 360 is finished.

BOWSER HAS RESET MY STARS TO ZERO FOR INSULTING TEH SYSTEM!

PS3 will do all the 360 can do and will have the same, if not more 3rd party support so IMO the 360 is finished.

But crucially it will be out a year later and could be up to

Well the thing i'm looking forward to most are the wild statements Sony will make to hype up the PS3. Remember what Kutaragi said for the PS2?

- "You can communicate to a new cybercity. Did you see the movie The Matrix? Same interface. Same concept. Starting from next year, you can jack into The Matrix!"

Smilie I wonder what other gems they'll come up with this year...

"The PS3 is powered by your life-force! Just plug in your Wii and you'll be screaming 'Wheeeee!!' Then you'll transported to a parallel universe which exists in realm between existence and non-existence, where u cease to be a flesh and blood being and instead are pure consciousness!!" Smilie

like.no.other indeed...

Nintendo gave TIME the first look at its new controller--but before I pick it up, Miyamoto suggests that I remove my jacket. That turns out to be a good idea. The first game I try--Miyamoto walks me through it, which to a gamer is the rough equivalent of getting to trade bons mots with Jerry Seinfeld--is a Warioware title (Wario being Mario's shorter, fatter evil twin). It consists of dozens of manic five-second mini games in a row. They're geared to the Japanese gaming sensibility, which has a zany, cartoonish, game-show bent. In one hot minute, I use the controller to swat a fly, do squat-thrusts as a weight lifter, turn a key in a lock, catch a fish, drive a car, saut

Great article by the way, not long to wait now!

Where did u get that article from jamain? Time magazine or The Times newspaper? Any link online?

Theres a thread on it, look at the recent posts bar.Smilie

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

http://revo.ds-x2.com/ have it on their site too...

http://www.frd.co.uk/ probably not the place to post this but they've updated their site and logo. Looks promising. Fingers crossed for wii games!
