Sony: The Greatest Nintendo Wiip-Off Ever
    Adam Riley :: 9th May 2006

When Nintendo originally revealed its special wireless, motion detecting controller to the world, everyone was completely stunned. However, once the thrill of the idea faded, people began to wonder if the normally so well-guarded Nintendo had made a fatal mistake by revealing its hand so early. Now many believe that the worst has actually happened, with Sony blatantly lifting the company's innovative idea. Read on for a detailed analysis of Sony's Press Conference...

I[/size][/b]t is not everyday that you can sit back and accuse a company of completely ripping-off a fellow Industry competitor, but Sony really has taken the biscuit this time round. But let us start at the beginning; start with what was revealed at the conference last night.

First of all, Sony is definitely planning on hitting the world with the PlayStation 3 as quickly as possible with hardly any pause for breath between the three major territories. Unlike the staggered PlayStation Portable launch, which saw Europe's release delayed by six months, Sony is to keep its promise of a worldwide release by sliding into Japan on 11th November, 2006 and then, just a week later, bombarding Europe and the USA on 17th November. This point alone is very interesting considering what problems Microsoft faced when trying a similar trick last year. Stock shortages killed the system over Christmas and retailers bemoaned how Microsoft had crushed potential sales and ruined firmly set plans.

Yet Sony has not only followed Microsoft's stance on the releasing of the PlayStation 3, but even 'paid homage' to the two-tier bundling idea. Therefore, for the 'Clear Black' model PS3 with a 60GB non-removable hard-drive you will have to hand over $599 /

I don't think Nintendo owns a part of Immersion. I think you are thinking about Microsoft. They bought a stake when they settled their suit.

That was a sweet article but then again what more can i expect from a site this good. I was quite impressed by the PS3's presse conference, it was actually really good. I stayed up until 3.00am this morning to watch it. As i thought i should since the PS3 will be my secondary console. But as good as the PS3 conference was i'm just too giddy to stay in my seat about Nintendo's. Anticipation ratings over the internet about their conference has been the highest of the 3 console companies. I have a feeling that Nintendo's gonna blow it all away....! And as the Wii is to be my Primary console, i'm poopping home RIGHT now to get ready for a live performance.

There's a reason because Ninty's conference stole the show both in 2004 and 2005, and this year won't be any different. It could very well be the best E3 ever for Nintendo!

I checked the Sony press-conference 12 hours ago an came to the same conclusion.
It was a very poor show Sony did. Even the Nintendo-hating website www.heise.de got this point.
Thank goodness Nintendo is last in presenting their ...crown jewels (sorry for being so blunt).
Very good article. Hope the gamers notice this too. Shame is: Microsoft is being attacked by a very weak PS3 and a strong Wii (which has to gain ground first to stand against billions of money behind a sanctioned sell of XBoxes...).
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Excellent write up Adam, I just came online to find out more about the Sony Conference (had to sleep last night, I was shattered), so finding this right here on Cubed3 made things nice and easy. Top stuff Smilie

You mentioned that they made no online plans, but they did say them in the conference....anyway, nicely summed up. I dunno about the hands on reports being good.

Did anyone else noticed now warhawk looked nigh on impossible to play?

:-s. That really came as a shock to me! I guess the good news it that it may allow more ports to the Wii much easier if a PS3 version has similar technology.

I'm also not sure how accurate a person can be using BOTH hands on the controller...might be a bit of a drawback we'll have to see.

This is my newer, bigger, reasonably sized signature. I hope it's not too big.

tHE ONLY THING THAT I REALLY LIKED ABOUT SONY'S RIP-OFF CONTROLLER WAS THE ABSENCE OF A SENSOR BAR THAT THE REVOLUTION DEV KITS HAD. THIS PROVES THAT THE FREESTLYE DOESN'T NEED ONE IN ORDER TO WORK. I THINK NINTENDO SHOULD STEAL THAT IDEA BACK OFF SONY, IF THE MIGHTY NINTY HASN'T ALREADY FORESEEN THIS OF COURSE. Smilie

No, the Wii needs a sensor bar because it does more stuff than the PS3. It couldn't be done withought some sort of positioned reciever.

Huh? Surely stealing an idea back is a bit like admitting it was Sony's idea in the first place? (If it's actually possible to steal an idea back...)

Both Nintendo and Microsoft own part of Immersion. Nintendo got there first, and Microsoft as part of their settlement.

The good new is, this is not a very good rip off of Nintendo's controller. You cannot fight with a sword or swing a tennis racquet or aim a weapon with any precision. This will come into play in racing or flight games, however. But can you imagine trying to hold down an acceleration button while flipping the controller around in your hand? Much too complicated.

The media should start to appreciate the vast difference today. And hopefully they will adequately pass this information on to the fans and average consumer, so no one is disappointed...

The PS3 is a half baked verison of Xbox Live mixed with a half baked version of Revolution/Wii functionality... If you want both, buy a 360 and a Revolution/Wii for the best of both worlds instead of something so average on both fronts.

this sought of angered me at first but i dont mind so much now, its kind of nintendo's fault for telling every one. Its like the Americans were telling the world that they were going to capture binladen which would only alert him to make a quik getaway. Nintendo werent going to make that much ground with a name like "wii" anyway in my opinion.
