E3 2006 News | Nintendo Unveil Classic/Shell Controller

By Karn Spydar Lee Bianco 09.05.2006 35

Earlier this evening we uploaded a series of hardware shots for the Nintendo Wii (http://www.cubed3.com/news/5098/). Amongst these was the first official image for the 'Shell-Controller', I.E the one that looks somewhat more like a conventional controller than the remote and nun chuck doo-hicky.

We felt the revelation was being somewhat overlooked due to the immense amount of content being posted, so for any of you that missed her, here is the final design for the 'Shell-Controller'
(which has been renamed 'Classic Controller' by Nintendo.) Just click the thumbnail below for the full size image!

For one reason or another Nintendo felt the need to leave this little beauty out of their Press Conference earlier this evening. Nevertheless we're sure you will agree it looks mighty fine and intensely comfortable.

Along with the usual D-Pad and shoulder buttons, etc

What a beauty..simple yet fun

Looks just like a SNES pad, but with anolouge sticks! Looks wired as well, any info on a wireless version being available at all?

Don't forget to add, L and R are analogue.

It looks great Smilie

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

I likes it lots!! Smilie

Quite the opposite in fact.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

So I assume you hated the SNES-pad as well?

I think it looks awesome!! =)

Working like a fiend isn't very fun... and surprisingly isn't very fiendish either.

What the hell!? How could anyone like that! It's terrible. The SNES controller seemed good at the time, but it's one of the least ergonomic controller ever... They should have just stuck to a GC controller with some extra buttons...

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

But whats the point, when you can plug in GC gamepad directly into Wii anyway.

No, but we've come a VERY long way since then.

Most definately. I'm glad you pointed this out, spydar. Keep the news flowing!

hmm, sticks at the base, d-pad in primary position.

4 face buttons in diamond formation

2 shoulder buttons per shoulder.

Can anyone say dual shock only much less comfortable?

Can anyone say classic SNES pad for classsic games?

I'm a bit confused, will it lock into the remote (nun-chuck style) or is it wired? Plus, does it come as standard with the Wii? Too many questions!

There are going to be a lot of jealous Sony fanboys roaming the boards saying anything Nintendo puts out is crap. Beware.

BOWSER HAS RESET MY STARS TO ZERO FOR INSULTING TEH SYSTEM!

I expect it is wired to the Wii-mote, not the system itself. I wonder what added functionality this provides?

After the Gameboy Micro, I think this looks kind of big, but after hearing the Wii name, nothing Nintendo does ever again could be considered so bad. I can live with this "classic" controller... I will probably rub off the Wii name, however.

i like it!!! it looks like a SNES controller!!!! Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

A very sensible looking controller. Reminicient of the SNES controller but with up to date functions. Great!

It looks nice indeed! I wish the d-pad was swapped with the analogue stick, bit more comfortable that way, but I can get used to it.

SmilieOMG!

I don't see what most of you are complaining about. If you liked the snes controller then you'd have no worries about this one.

They must be thinking that the d-pad will get used more. Which is understandable.

The SNES didn't have dual analogue games, so it didn't need support for the palms of your hands. Dual analogue control requires precision and lots of support for your hands, otherwise your hands will ache no-end. There's a reason for the extra bits on the N64, Playstation and Saturn 3D pads which you rose-tinted fanboys seem to be forgetting.

FFS, have you ever played and FPS?!

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I suspect this thing is rather small. A lot smaller than we'd imagine.

Those 4 shoulder buttons, 2 analogue and 2 normal, have to be reachable by your index fingers, so this thing is probably smaller than a DS.
