E3 2006 News | Wii Controller to Have Speaker

By James Temperton 09.05.2006 19

This, as far as we are aware, is the final design of the Wii controller. It features the logo of the system and most importantly has a speaker included (just below the power button). This speaker, Nintendo claim will add a brilliantly innovative new feature to the system. The example they used during a demonstration was firing an arrow from a bow. When you pull back and fire, the sound of the arrow travels from the controller speaker and then 'moving' to the speakers on your TV system when it hits its target. The thud sound of the arrow hitting your enemy should be more satisfying than ever! Yet another example of how Nintendo are trying to make gaming more immersive by breaking down gameplay barriers and putting you in the game, not with graphics, but with touch, feel and now even sound!

Expect a full hands on with the Nintendo Wii from our reporters at E3 tomorrow!

Weird, a and b are now 1 and 2.
The speaker is deifintly a nice feature, while not breath taking as the motion sensing and stuff a very nice touch indeedSmilie

This had better not be a cheap ass little "musical birthday card" speakerSmilie

Agreed, I quite like the idea of sound coming out of the controller.

Working like a fiend isn't very fun... and surprisingly isn't very fiendish either.

Lol all they need now is a screen and they have a friggen handheld Smilie. Seriously how much is each controller gonna be!

Lol, probably a teeny bit more the standard controllers (I'd reckon a bit more than the Wavebird used to be).

I suspect it will cost less than the $50 Microsoft charges for its Xbox wireless controller. I am hoping two are included with the console. It would definitely support the Wii/we concept.

I am still hoping it includes a Mic, so it can approximate some of the DS functionality. I would like to see Karaoke Revolution for the Wii/Revolution.

Other than the Wii name, this is a very attractive controller, and I can see it appealing to style conscious women as much as tech savvy men, especially in white. It looks comfortable.

The DS speakers are substantially better than those in the PSP, so I have no doubt this will also sound better than a greeting card speaker.

No triple posting on these forums mate, you should fit that all into the one post before the mods getcha Smilie

EDIT: OMG QUADRIPLE POST!

SQUEEEEE

I think the speaker will be more effective than we anticipate, especialy if used with a full surround-sound set up.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

It's kinda like the next step in surround sound, like having your own personal sound.

It was shown in the Super Mario Galaxy trailer as Mario grabbed a coin the girl put the remote up to her ear. Just what I was thinking, a type of surround sound trying to make us feel more like we're a part of the game.

I think of it more as an extention of the rumble feature.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Think about it. Your swinging a sword and you hit a shield. A clang comes out of your Wiiwand.

Exactly.

This sounded a bit silly when the rumours came out before last night but Nintendo have done it again, makes perfect sense now!

Such a clever little idea, can't wait. Smilie

If nintendo are so keen on sound immersion, i hope that they can include true dolby surround sound this time, pro logicII on GC just doesnt satisfy me.

-Have you any idea what it's like to be a Fembot living in a Manbot's Manputer's world?
-What?
