E3 2006 News | Opera Browser on Wii

By John Boyle 10.05.2006 9

Opera Software has released a statement saying that an Opera Browswer will be loaded onto the Wii and will be fully compatible with the Wii controller. This suggests it'll be there from launch as standard although there's been no confirmation of that.

Users of the Wii console will browse the Internet using their consoles. Navigating via the innovative new Wii Remote controller, users can visit Web sites in between gaming sessions.

"Nintendo is clearly visionary in leading the gaming industry into the new era in gaming, and a wonderful partner for Opera," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Nintendo, and work with them to deliver the best gaming experience on the Wii console and the Nintendo DS(TM)."

"For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was fast and secure with support for the latest standards including AJAX. Opera proved perfect for our purposes and is an exceptional addition to both the Nintendo DS and the Wii console," said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager, Integrated Research & Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.

More on this love-fest as we get it. Stick with C3 throughout E3 for hands on reports, video content, analysis, news and more, oh so very much more.

Smilie Well it beats them moaning about them!

Hopefully the Wii will be easier to use then past console browser attempts (cough DC cough). It'll be nice to see a dedictade Nintendo Wii page exclusive for the console, but we'll have to see what is planned.

Surf the web via the two most user friendly online devices ever designed... okay, maybe not the best, but you get the picture.

Opera + Nintendo = Really really good.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

how would one type in addresses etc with the wii-mote? I guess an on screen keyboard where you point at letters or something but that sounds like it could be a pain

Better than on any other console though (apart from the DS). If there was a keyboard like on the Dreamcast, I'd get it.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Cool!

Hopefully it'll be decent but it's only really an extra anyway so if they screw it up I'm not all that bothered.

Nintopera?

"Browswer"?

I sense spinoff sequel! Super Mario Browsing' anyone?
