E3 2006 News | Rare Confirms Working With Nintendo

By Adam Riley 10.05.2006 20

Nintendo announced yesterday that it was bringing the Nintendo 64 classic racer Diddy Kong Racing to the Nintendo DS, but the question remained, would Rare help develop it like it did with the DKC GBA ports? Cubed3 spoke with Rare's Wil Overton earlier today to receive official confirmation and was told to keep a close eye on the company's official website. Now that confirmation has indeed appeared:

It's showtime again! Woo. And this year sees double the boggly-eyed animal fun as two separate Rare-developed titles strut their stuff around downtown LA.

E3 '06 is also the debut stage for our latest collaboration with Nintendo: we've possibly hinted at it in the past, but then again we've also hinted at a lot of other things, because we're like that. Yes, Diddy Kong Racing is our first official DS project, and Nintendo are busily promoting it as part of their next wave of big DS offerings for late 2006. Based on the N64 classic but improved and expanded in ways that only the DS allows, you can see the first shot and movie snippet over on NCL's website if you haven't already.

A few tantalising DKR DS info-bites to keep you going: eight-player single-card and multi-card WiFi play, touch-screen and microphone compatibility, some familiar faces in newly playable form, remodelled and retextured tracks, customisable vehicles, new modes, weapons and challenges, a little something called TT's Wish Races where you can create your very own tracks... and it doesn't end there.

But for now, kick back and enjoy the show, sunbeams!"

SmilieSmilieSmilieSmilie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't expect this! Still, the old Rare did a great job with Diddy Racing, we'll just have to see how this pans out.

And so it begins! With Activision holding the Bond rights and Nintendo ever-closer relationship with that company, who's to say we won't eventually see a GoldenEye port in the future? Smilie

DKR was heaps better than MK64, hopefully Rare can surpass MKDS with this.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Awesome!
I think this clears up any rumours about Microsoft entering the handheld market as well, does it not?

wow its sounds like that it gonna a great game!! hopefully it will be as good as the N64 game!!!!

why does M$ allow RARE to work with Nintey, its like letting Sony work with Retro Studios or somehting similar!?!?!?

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

MS IS working on a handheld, but chances are it won't be out for at least a year or so...That means that basically MS wants a piece of the Nintendo DS pie whilst it can. Plus the added bonus of helping keep the PSP down until MS's handheld DOES arrive.

It makes business sense in the end...plus Rare still loves Nintendo, so it keeps them happy it would seem! Smilie

If I were Rare, I'd be pissed that I wasn't allowed to develop for Wii.

Apparently the team's happy as they are, but I'm sure from a creative perspective it must be sorely tempting to play around with it. Same goes for MS-owned Lionhead now...

Lemme get this straight, Nintendo sell Rare for the best part of $500,000,000, then claims royalties for it developing DS titles, aswell as benefit from 3rd party support and an increased games roster, and Microsoft is funding this?
The irony...

They're doing it to piss off Sony and are getting money off the back of a competitor in a sector of the market they're not currently involved in. Sounds like a good move to me.

Great news, I was hoping Rare were handling it but didn't think it'd be the case!

Yes! hopfully this will beat maro kart DS. too many ds games out which shall I buy help!

I want to have hot, sweaty buttsechs with this thread and everything it contains.

Rare is working on a Nintendo console!? Microsoft saying Nintendo is better than SONY!!! I'm getting suspiciousSmilie

Screw that thought, Go Nintendo and Microsoft!!

Does this mean we may see Rareware games on the VC after all? Hope so.

VC is a shaky point...relations between Nintendo and MS are better than ever, with MS very eager still to buy up Nintendo as a whole...

So VC stuff could happen, but AFTER appearing on XBLA most likely.
