E3 2006 Video | Nintendo Shows Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Update with E3 2006 Screens!

By Adam Riley 12.05.2006 152

At a special developer event, Nintendo has lifted the lid on Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii. An entirely new team has been pieced together for this outing, after Shigeru Miyamoto approached Masahiro Sakurai about creating a Wii version. Sakurai-san insisted that the Wii controller NOT be used for the game, therefore gamers can actually use their GameCube controllers once more to battle it out on the big screen. This confirms that the GC controllers can in fact be used for Wii games if so desired.

Single player will have (so far unannounced) changes to it, plus there will be a new online multiplayer option and lots of new characters! Confirmed so far are:

  • Pit from Kid Icarus
  • Samus in her sexy Zero Mission suit
  • Metaknight
  • Wario
  • Snake from Metal Gear Solid (at the specific request of Hideo Kojima!)
  • The game has also been confirmed as being pushed back into 2007.

    Some other details, courtesy of Games Are Fun, include:

  • Nobuo Uematsu, the genius behind Final Fantasy's greatest tunes, will compose the main theme;
  • Opera singer Ken Nishikiori has lent his vocals to the game;
  • All the music in Brawl is performed by a full orchestra;
  • There will be a deluxe chorus with lyrics in Latin(!);
  • The atmosphere of the game will be changed, in a so far unknown way!
  • You can listen to the main theme tune by following this link: http://www.smashbros.com/en/music/index.html

    I cannot tell you how excited I was when I saw that video on gametrailers.com (well... yes I can, I was REALLY excited). I have never felt so giddy (well... yes I have, but not for anything I've seen so far from all companies). It put such a big smile on my face.

    Pit looks great (perhaps a prelude to the Kid Icarus game people say is coming). And whoa, Solid Snake (thank you Sakurai for bringing the idea back, and thank you Kojima for wanting it there in the first place). I hope this means a little something for the Wii from the MGS universe (I really hope so).

    There's a form right now here:

    http://www.smashbros.com/jp/toukou/index.html

    Supposedly it's for suggestions as to what other characters people want to include in SSBB. Anyone know Japanese here? I think it'd be a good idea to have somebody speak for the non-Japanese speaking public as to what they want to add in the roster.

    I'd like to have at least Sonic, Tails, Rayman, Leon Kennedy & Ada Wong (from RE4), Megaman, Revolver Ocelot (with accompanying MGS1/2/3 stages), etc. What can I say, almost everyone has their nemesis so I thought having Ocelot would be a nice choice.

    Anyway, really excited about this. Having Snake in SSBB is the biggest surprise of E3 I think. I hope they take their time. No rush from me. Add as many stuff as you like. Seriously, SSB series has been like the best in-game advertisement EVER. The trophy mode alone provides a lot of introduction to unfamiliar series and gets people interested. They should do that too in SSBB but in a industry wide scale (well... maybe not the whole industry, but perhaps something from Capcom, Konami, Square-Enix, Namco-Bandai, Sega, etc.) That's free advertisement in there for those companies (assuming they bother to put games like Metal Gear Solid on the Wii, wink wink).

    Now, work with me here: a Nintendo All-Star RPG.

    May 10, 2006 - Nintendo just pulled a fast one on us. At an after-hours press briefing a mere minute ago, the company pulled another ace out of its sleeve: Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- the next installment in Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series.

    Shigeru Miyamoto himself has confirmed the following playable characters:

    # Pit (Kid Icarus)
    # Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
    # Zero Suit Samus (the blue "no-suit" Samus from Metroid: Zero Mission)
    # Metaknight (Kirby)
    # Wario (Wario)

    Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.

    "We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been," said Sakurai. "The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."

    The game also features a range of new nasty toys, such as the ability to unleash a puppy from Nintendogs that will run up to the screen, put its paws up and obscure the view of the action. Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link have been confirmed as returning characters. Sakurai confirmed that Wario actually has a fart attack and that Solid Snake can use his trusty cardboard box. In the video trailer, Snake gets out of the box and says "It's showtime!"

    "We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl," said Sakurai. "As you all know Snake walks around with a gun, but with Super Smash Bros. I didn't want to bring in a lot of real weapons. So that was a real challenge. But conversely, if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, not only would that be fitting for Snake, but it would work for the other characters. But who knows. Maybe Snake will exclusively use explosives throughout the game."

    Sakurai said the decision to include Solid Snake when Hideo Kojima himself practically "begged" to include the Metal Gear character in the last Smash Bros. game. When asked about the possibility of Sonic the Hedgehod appearing in the game as well, Shigeru Miyamoto said: "There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even know there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters."

    Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode. "My plan is to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality. One of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that," added Sakurai.

    The bad news is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will no longer be a Wii launch title, but will instead be released in 2007.

    Just saw this too. Looks to be pretty nice. I'm still of mixed opinions on the choice not to include motion sensing control with the game. On one hand, it seems that the motion sensing would just get in the way, but on the other, it seems there will not be too big of an incentive to choose this over Super Smash Bros. Melee. Sure, there's the fact that the graphics will be better, there will be Wi-fi compatibility, and new characters. But, if we're still playing with the Gamecube controller, I just don't know how much "different" it will be. As I said earlier, using the Wii-mote would probably mess it up, so I guess at the end of the day I'm glad this'll be using a traditional controller.

    I can't figure out why they didn't announce this yesterday at their pre-E3 conference. It seems like just the opportunity to do it, as this is one of the most anticipated titles of them all. This way, the effect will not be as big, though most people will still hear about it. Perhaps this trickling of news during E3 is an indication that even more information will be released in the next couple days like pricing or release date, perhaps? I sure hope so...

    It was announced that you can use either the GC controller with old fashion controls, or use a new control layout with the wiimote. Best of both worlds.

    At first I was pretty pissed about having snake in the game, I mean, it's a Nintendo game and now-a-days Snakes' not even on Nintendo's systems. I mean, sure he's a cool character, but he just doesn't seem at home on the Wii, i mean what, we got 1 of the solids. So i'm staring at this asking myself, "What the hell?". Now though i'm not sure what to think, that trailer made Snake's entrence hilarious, and perhaps we may see ports of the old games onto the Wii, in a similar way as Twin Snakes. Not to mention the fact that the internet has exploded with nothing but positive comments about Snakes' inclusion.

    Also, if this hasn't been posted yet Nintendo of Japan have released a survey where Japanese people can write in and suggest characters to fill the Smash Bros. Roster with all their fan favorites. Rumors have been circulating that Sega wanted Sonic in Melee so he is very likely to make an appearance in Brawl.

    On a final note; there are exciting possibilities with the WiiConnect24 system and Smash Bros. Imaging having new levels and characters uploaded to your system continuously.

    The graphical upgrade is phenominal! Love the shot of the battle on the castle. Few things that I noticed, looks like each character has a special move when they grab the Smash Bros. logo, very cool and also this gives us an insight into what to expect of the graphical style of the new Kid Icarus game, Pit looks ace! Sucks that it won't be out until next year, but if it's to add new characters it is well worth the wait. This game will rule!

    If Kid Icarus is in this game could that mean he's not getting a game of his own?

    Snake? Snake... SNAKKKKEEE!

    Brilliant news, was wondering about the suspicious silence eminating about this game.

    It'd be nice to see some other characters from other companies make an appearance. Sega especially. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow would be nice! Or even a few more of the DK clan! Or my personal ninty favourite...the always under used...WaLuigi! Smilie

    I can't believe, how good...it...looks!!!!!!!!!!!

    How the hell can I go back to melee after this? The design, the levels, graphics, intensity, wackiness, new characters, internet play. OMG OMG OMG OMG
    The attacks look...WOW
    And the theme song? Latin Operah I love it. How can this game not be good?

    ThIS IS BIGGER THAN ZELDA...BY 100X

    You can tell I am an avid SSb fan.

    I don't want this to turn into another "what do you want to see in Smash Bros 3" but I don't want to see any more MGS characters. Snake has only been in one Nintendo game that I can remember. Although, technically Ganondorf was only in one game when he was in Melee. Anyway the point is Hideo Kojima begged for Snake to be in the game, he wouldn't be in there otherwise, so far I like the new additions to the game, except Wario.

    I HAVE TO GET A WII NOW!!! THAT WAS SO AWESOME!

    Smash bros melee was the reason I wanted a Cube, looks like this will be the reason I want a Wii..

    Bloody sexual news. My only worry is that Nintendo have nothing more to give, so much has happened in the past 3 days Smilie

    Metal gear Orginated on NES. And besides...why the hell not? Smash Bros is a wacky that is NOT supposed to make sense. Just look at Samus fighting Ice Climbers? WTF? I would love to see more surprises like this.

    HOW Cool does the no-suit samus look? Or the new Great Fox ship for Fox? And I think they've implemented a new kind of stronger smash attack. Mario has that fireblast, link has the triforce attack and samus has that ULTRA HUGE charge beam.

    Wonder what the Wii functionality is going to be (p.s i am glad they stuck to gc controller).

    Oh seriously now, just fuck off would you Nintendo!?

    We do not deserve this years E3!

    This looks... words can't describe it. Eurgh.

    So many games!

    Apparently the single-player this time through is a lot deeper and more 'robust.'

    i shouldn't be surprised at all this stuff, I mean they have a HUGE team working on it.

    I really like the single player in Melee so and even beter one should be kick ass!
