E3 2006 Interview | Nintendo May Terminate the Game Boy?

I[/size][/b]n an interview with Reuters, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata talked about how the company may not launch a successor to the GBA purely because of the major success the Nintendo DS is currently having. He was quoted as saying:
Nintendo mentioned that third-party research confirms that around 16 million DS units have been actually sold (NOT just shipped, Sony...) around the whole of the world, beating out the PlayStation Portable by a considerable amount.
And with more than 74 million GBA units (original, SP and micro) sold, as of December 2005, it is hard to ignore the Japanese video game maker's sheer portable dominance.
Iwata also went on record, stating that there will be ten software titles alongside the launch of the Nintendo Wii, which is set for release in the fourth quarter of 2006. This double digits launch line-up is to prevent a repeat of the disappointing performance of its current generation console GameCube, which had a weak launch and never fully recovered from that point onwards. He went on to say:
Stick with C3 for further updates...
"I would have a second thought about using our resources on what would be the next generation of Game Boy Advance, considering the strong support DS is now enjoying. The Japanese game market is now evolving around DS. We don't need to do something that will pour cold water on the situation."

He went on to say:
"I am aware that we cannot win user support by offering only a few titles at the launch like we did for Nintendo 64 and GameCube ... We want to make it a double digit and we are able to do that. Our target is not to fight the battle in the next-generation console market, but to expand the game market and game population. We are fighting not with Sony or Microsoft, but with indifference among our potential customers. We are the only one who has clearly made it a mission to lure those who don't play games and those who have quit playing games, and to break down a wall in a household between players and non-players. If that goal is achieved, there is a good chance that we can be number one."

SHould be a great launch with Zelda , Metroid and the Wii sports titles. As for the GB succesor, i really don't see the point in another GameBoy.

Mario isn't a launch title but is hoped to be out within the 6 months after launch. I think Red Steel and perhaps Wario: Smooth Moves may also be at launch. Oh I also remember reading something about Excite Truck being a launch title.

That's an interesting quote. Makes a lot of sense though, the DS is extremely popular and I don't see a need for a new Gameboy as it is. Kind of disappointing news about the launch titles, only half of what was originally speculated. Still gets my seal of approval... whatever that is.

I think a few people may have missed the jist of this topic.
To be honest, i belive its quite good news for Nintendo. They've opened up the market and don't need a GBA2. Look at where the GBA2 could go? As far as i'm concerned, it'll be in the same market as the PSP. Just better graphics.
Iwata even said that if the DS failed, Nintendo would majorly struggle and so called the DS the third pillar alongside the GB series and the Home series. its quite obvious that the DS is the only pillar at this point in time and with the GBA still selling and the Wii on the way, another GBA isn't a top priority.
I'm sure Nintendo could actually think of something worth doing with the Gameboy franchise in the future, as the DS won't last forever. But at this point in time thers no need. Maybe we'll see a Gameboy Enhanced in a few years time, with GC capabilities. But the public (after the success of the DS and Wii) will demand more from Ninty.

As a huge Gameboy fan, i don't think that ait should be scrapped altogether but delayed for a least a couple of years. Iwata-san is really making alot of sense and i'm starting to see alot more clearly Nintendo's longterm strategy first with the DS and now with the Wii

Didn't the Cube launch with 20 games? (In Europe anyway). Ahh well, I suppose about half of them were just PS3 ports anyway.
The Wii launch line-up is already looking solid!
As for terminating the Game Boy- I'm not surprised. After making such bold statements about attracting new gamers with the DS (which has clearly been a HUGE success!), Nintendo couldn't really back out of it easily. It is a shame though, the Game Boy is a huge piece of gaming history!

Good move. Why rain on their own parade with a new iteration of Game Boy? I think they should just continue on with the DS line, and when they want to create a new handheld just do a new DS, but with added features like tilt in-built, and whatever other random things they can think of. I don't see a new Nintendo handheld coming for at least 2 or 3 years with how well they're doing, that little DS baby is helping them claw their way back to the top, at least in Japan.

im sad that Nintey are stoping the GBA but the DS is on fire right now, and the GBA needs a break for a few years then hopefully we will get a super sexy good looking GameBoy!!! anyway this doesnt mean that we wont see any more GBA software coz whoever has a DS can play GB games on it!!!
anyway i wish Nintey all the good luck in the world!!!

I don't think Nintendo will ever truly terminate the Game Boy. It is an icon in gaming history and can't possibly be terminated after almost 20 years in production! Nintendo Game Boy was what drew me to gaming and was my first true console along with a Famicom. Perhaps Nintendo will put it on hold for a while but definitely not cease production.

A new gameboy would hurt the DS. I've pretty much abandoned my GBA (then again, I never bought all that many games for it...). It'd be hard for me to support two systems. Besides, you usually don't wanna take to gaming devices with you, so you usually just pick which side you want your loyalty to be for a few years and stick with it. They'd be dividing they're on market for no reason.
As far as the Wii launch goes, I'd expect that Project H.AM.M.E.R game to launch. It doesn't look all that complicated...but a heck load of fun
That's one of the first games I'm getting so far, along with Wii Sport and Red Steel and whatever else I can afford

I think the GBA still has a little life left in it, and will continue to do so in the DS, it's hard to predict the future in an young industry like this one, but I'm sure it'll be resurrected, maybe as a real games/phone console, Nintendo's research labs have plenty of time to come up with something.
The last thing I can remember reading on the subject of GBA 2 was that Nintendo was working on a new technology called 'Switching screens' the idea is to show an image through these two screens that are placed on top of each other, causing the image to split, half being received by the right eye, and the other by the left, inducing a stereoscopic effect.
However at the moment, the screens are too far apart to be made into a portable device.
This is just one of the many things Nintendo are probably working on, which may never come to fruition. Ive always been convinced the DS was just plucked out of a lab with a whole array of other potential candidates for the industry, but being closer to finalisation, and probably easier for the consumer to comprehend, it made its debut, to light Nintendos dark hour, and this time, thanks to Nintendo's perseverance, the consumer is attracted to new generation gameplay, not a fancy logo or CGI cutscenes lagged in blood to add to your marketing power, now this has been proved, not even "Sony PS4, The Return" can stop them.
So Nintendo, whats it like to be number 1, again?

Who are we trying to kid the DS is really a gameboy with a diffrent name. I mean theres no point in releasing a Gameboy sequel that was a PSP clone.

Nintendo won't terminate the Game Boy product line. There are far too many gamers out there in the likes of Japan and co. that use the product for quick gaming on the go. With Square Enix re-launching their Final Fantasy series from 1
