Nintendo News | Sega Confirms Future Nintendo Support

By Adam Riley 22.05.2006 24

According to a Press Release over the weekend, Sega Sammy has revealed to what extent it will be supporting each platform in this fiscal year, which ends in March 2007. The list showing the number of games per format is as below:

  • PlayStation Portable - 29
  • PlayStation 2 - 28
  • PlayStation 3 - 17
  • Nintendo DS - 17
  • Xbox 360 - 14
  • Wii - 7
  • GameCube - 2
  • Game Boy Advance - 2
  • Xbox - 1
  • It is surprising that the support for the Nintendo Wii is currently so poor in comparison to the XBOX 360 and even the high-priced PlayStation 3. All that can be hoped is that the Wii titles are of a higher quality, rather than rushed updates of old XBOX/PS2 titles...

Well, the support is there, in the same way it was for the Cube suppose, it's fairly minimal compared to the other consoles which is dissappointing after all these comments of "They share our philosophy" that I seem to remember reading.

I hope they realise that Wii is equally as good a console to develop for as any other because it appeals to a different and/or wider market, for less money they could get one hell of an audience and a lot of exposure.

Yes, it seems so. But maybe they waited for the development kit to be delivered. They may not know how the Wii-market developes and they may be supporting the wiimote for their titles. It's a totally new game-experiance after all. You can't implement it like buttons. There has to be developed some conventions: fire is on B, jumping on A - but where putting it on the Wiimote? Every type of gestures is different from game to game. I think you should run some human-computer-interacting-tests (in plain english: place your mother-in-law in front of the screen and ask her to show you how to make a gesture of chopping vegetables to implement this!

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I wouldn't judge support by the amount of titles made for a console, but rather the quality and effort put into the titles Smilie Who knows, mayb we'll get the best titles of them all Smilie

I think they're just testing the waters first of all - if those 7 titles do well or are well-received, I expect them to ramp up support.

To be fair. Sega put a lot of support into the Cube and it didn't pay off as much as they'd hoped. Sonic Adventure 1, adventure 2, Mega collection, Gems collection, Heroes and Riders. The first 2 having the GBA link up feature. Exclusives like Billy Hatcher (under rated imo) and that moster creating game - monster island (?). Plus crazy Taxi and a few others. Yeah some of them may be ports, but they we're released. On top of that. Some of the Sonic games we're timed exclusives and didn't appear on the PS2/Xb for a good long time, which they should've done early on.

I still think theres a lot of support for Nintendo from Sega. If they create 7 Wii exclusives and busily port games between PS2 and PSP, i'd be happy with the exclusives. Also, they may see that Nintendo is moving for a different audience and want to create new games, not franchised sonic games, for the Wii.

Can you believe how much the PSP is getting?! It's crazy! Not even the DS has that many! Smilie

Any chance of one of those 7 games being Shenmue 3?

I find that rather suprising as well. One might think the DS's larger and younger fanbase would be an ideal format for Sonic and company...

Well, no surprise here, SEGA nearly failed after all. They're just confirming their bad attitude. Insisting on dead franchises and letting down other ones which could be much more popular (Wonder Boy? Nights? Shinobi? Clockwork Night? Burning Rangers? and these ones are just the first that come to my mind...)

Hopefully so and a new Samba De Amigo game! But i'd still like to see some light gun games.

I'll bet they are wishing they had reversed those numbers at this point. With PS3 looking like it will be a failure (or at least in third place for a long time to come) and Nintendo likely to be first, this seems to be a mismatch of development resources.

I just hope Nights is one oft he Wii titles!

Even more surprising is the PSP getting more titles than the DS. Isn't Sega a Japanese company? Don't they know the PSP is getting creamed out there, and at least narrowly in all other territories? The release of the DS Lite will amplify this difference in the US and UK...

Maybe they are going off of those foolish analyst reports about the future of the game industry. Those same alalyst have all pretty much reversed their thinking after E3, however.

Don't Sony PS3 games cost $25 million to produce? IMO, this could put Sega in a really bad position financially in a year's time.

Sega is like a lot of other companies that are putting most of their resources behind the development of games for Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 thinking that they will benefit from the console war between Microsoft and Sony.

29 games!? Why can't SEGA just start making a few decent games again, rather than 14 billion shite ones...

They won't all be developed by SEGA. They're a publisher too, remember.

Well even then they should try to publish a few decent games rather than 7 billion shite ones...

Yes but how many of those 29 playsation portable ones are ports of PS1 and PS2 games?

Also how many of the Ps3 lineup are just PS2 titles moved to the PS3 and shared with the 360?

bloody hell 29 games for PSP WTF!?!?!?

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

To be totally fair, we don't know what they're putting out for the most part, so it's difficult to judge if they'll be good or crap.

You have to remember, Xbox 360 has been out since last December so support there is bound to be more in that regard. I was expecting at least one Nintendo product to be quite high and rightly so for Nintendo DS.
