Wii to Launch Around Thanksgiving in North America

By James Temperton 31.05.2006 64

According to an industry source speaking to Cubed3, the Nintendo Wii is set to launch in the "Thanksgiving period in the USA" (Thanksgiving falls on November 23rd this year), with Japanese and European launches set to be "in the same timeframe". With Nintendo trying for a worldwide launch of their new system, this would probably lead to the system coming out marginally before in Japan and "a few weeks later in Europe".

Our source tells us that the Wii will be on sale in the USA "well in time for Thanksgiving and well in time for Christmas in Europe". Details on the Japanese launch were not so clear, but our source did suggest that it would fall very close, if not before the American launch of the system.

So, we're looking at an early November release for the system. This falls quite nicely in line with a recent announcement by Nintendo where they gave dates for their DS, GameCube and GBA titles for later this year. All titles stopped before November. With this information in hand, we pushed our source a bit further to see if they had an idea of a more exact date. Today, we were provided with the following information...

"So, at the moment Nintendo are aiming to launch the Wii on November 6th"

Our source emphasised that this date is correct at present, but pointed out: "Nintendo aren't going to have an exact date in mind until they are sure they can meet the deadlines". Take it as a guide then if you will, but "they are very keen to be ready in time".

Obviously this shouldn't be taken as gospel and we're not about to shout from rooftops that we have the final Wii launch date, but we are confident that the information we have is correct; we wouldn't share it with you if it wasn't. Hopefully Nintendo will clear up all confusion very soon by confirming the launch details of the Wii. We'll have more for you as and when it happens.

I'm quite sure that in Europe Nintendo will launch two colours for the Wii as they are going to do with the DS. EG Black and White.

Yeah, I'd say 2 colours as well. Makes production of the console that bit easier.

Yeah, were all pretty happy at the exclusive. And we are pretty reliable, got our E3 news up extremely quickly, didnt go down at any point, a fully up to date games database, regulary updated media, popular podcast feature, popoular regular articles, regular interviews with various people associated with the industry and finally were so reliable and such an excellent site that we managed to bring such a legendary member out of retirement Smilie. Welcome back grammar police, how we missed you.
Yeah...what happened to my old ID? For some reason, I couldn't log in. Was the account deleted? Clearly you got many hits. Most news sites would get many hits if/when they post something along the lines of this. I don't doubt C3's ability to bring us reliable news - as you pointed out, your E3 reporting - but you post news like this which seems to be pulled out of thin air (remember that news story, the DS will download stuff from anywhere? :lolSmilie.

Yeah, but that story was based on a patent, but when I was writing it I didn't have a clue what the technology was about or what it was saying. Basically it was the DS Download Service, so technically it did turn out to be true...sort of Smilie

The story isn't pulled out of thin air though, I can't see what more information is needed, that's pretty much what I was told, shoved in with a reminder that it is only a target date and might change. Just because IGN aren't saying it doesn't mean it lacks credibility Smilie

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

But you are doubting our ability to be reliable, you said "Oh yeah, like you guys are so reliable.". So are you basing this on one story that we posted up over 2 years ago? If so then it's a pretty weak thing to keep bringing up.

Not just one. Don't forget the DKC3 GBA review which did not even include a SMALL mention of a entire NEW WORLD in the whole review. I also remember the reviewer defending that decision saying that it wasn't necessary - either because they really didn't think it as needed, or they didn't play the game fully and therefore didn't know. How can someone review a game which is a port with NOTABLE new things and not mention them? That is just ridiculous. Mr. T - Yes, the DS download service. But your story was focusing on being able to use it from ANYWHERE. That was the selling point of your story. IIRC, I don't have the link to the article, but there was talk of 'rumours' there too.

Whatever, I shouldn't get carried away with the past Smilie

Do you not have anything better to do than come on here and just slate a piece of exclusive news that nobody else picked up on first?

YAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

I'm willing to bet my right testicle that it'll be released before Christmas in the UK. Nintendo will not miss the biggest selling event in the year!

that might just give me time to buy it, then ask for games for it for christmas
